NW hunger or misreading?
« on: July 07, 2011, 07:03:04 am »
Hi,
I have a 5 week old and we're trying to get him on EASy. During the day we have a rythm of EAS, but the times are varying a lot.
At night he's been having a feed at 10/11 and then waking again at 1/2 (which is fine). But for the past couple of nights, he's only taking about half a bottle then (on formula and he normally goes about 3 hours between feeds during the day). He then wakes again about and hour later. I'm not sure if this is just an unsettled short sleep or if he's hungry so I've  been giving him the rest of the bottle. He'll then sleep until about 5/6ish and then take a full bottle.
Any ideas? I'm not sure if we are making a bit enough distinction between night and day. What should I be doing after a night feed? I've been changing him if dirty and then holding and sh/p for about 10 min and then holding him for another 20 or so min since he does jolt/wiggle himself awake. Other than having A time before this, its the same ritual I do for his naps. Should it be different?
Thanks!

Is that three feeds in total a night? I personally think that's fine at that age. He is still very small.
What I did at night time is change nappy only if it was dirty, not wet as nappies today are very good and can last for a few hours. I would then whisper to him that he goes back to sleep because it is still night time and put him back in his crib. I would only go back to him if he starts crying. I wouldn't hold him for 20 min, let him wiggle himself and within time he will learn to settle himself back to sleep.
HTH.

I'm trying to cut down on the holding time, but sometimes it seems to be the only way he'll stay asleep.
I think I may be rushing in for the 1/2 o'clock feed, so tonight I'm going to try to give it a couple more min to make sure. Also giving him formula at night is new, so maybe that is a factor. So many variables it's really hard to figure these things out.
Many thanks for the help! Getting a quick response makes the tough moments a lot easier!!

You can put him down and help him settle in the crib.
You might create a prop like this, holding him for so long, and you don't want to be doing that when he weighs double of what he weighs now. You can lay him in the crib and if he starts crying you use the pat/shh to settle him (He might prefer just the pat or just the shh, you need to try thing out).
