Nap refusal at 24 mnths
« on: August 29, 2011, 19:14:19 pm »
My little guy will no longer nap. Discovered he could just get out of his bed and open door last week after 2 mnths of being in big boy bed. Now nap time is a fight which ends in no nap. He is very tired and grumpy by 3 pm. Any thoughts?

Hi there...

It would be helpful if you could post your LO's routine (time he wakes up/naps/goes to bed etc), so we can take a look at what's going on.

Do you have a toddler gate on his bedroom door? A Gro-clock or something similar could also help.

Sleep can go a little wonky at around 2yrs old as LO's sleep needs change & they also go through some developmental leaps. 2nd yr molars can also be an issue at around this time.

Thanks.  :)

You mention that her nap used to be at around 12.30/1pm for around 1.5/2hrs....is he not napping at all? When was the last time he napped. If he doesn't nap what time are you doing BT?

No nap for 5 days now. Except he did fall asleep for 20 min in stroller late afternoon yest cause he was so exhausted. Tried for 2 hrs today to get him to nap. No luck. He was tired. Still doing bedtime around same time. Maybe a bit earlier. But really feel he needs that nap. He's exhausted by 3 pm. Ugggg.

Yes, he's definitely too young to be dropping his nap yet.

What time have you been doing BT when he doesn't nap? The key is to do a as early a BT as possible.

If he's not napped for 5 days now then he will be very OT. I think I would try giving him a nap much earlier than usual (like 11/11.30am)...if he's very OT then you will more than likely be missing his sleep window if you have been trying to get him down at his usual nap time. Make his bedroom as un-interesting as possible by storing away all toys etc that can distract him from going to sleep. Also it would be worth trying a bit of a longer wind-down so that he is as calm as possible before he goes down.

If this doesn't work then I think you might need to try APOP'ing a nap in car/buggy just to try & get him caught up a bit (not ideal, I know but I think you need to try & curb the OT as much as possible).
