some Babies do not need to sleep?
« on: July 27, 2011, 00:44:40 am »
Is it true that some babies function perfectly with only a few cat naps all day???

Sometimes I'm reading that they need xxx hrs of sleep during the day and sometimes I read some babies are happy with a few 45 min naps.
Since my LO only naps for 45 min and I'm about to start the PU/PD to extend her naps I was wondering if I really should - what if her Biorhythm just needs a little sleep and there is no way to extend that??

Any comments and/or suggestions on that?

i actually think this about my son too. I have no hard facts to give you, but in my opinion this is the case. He is 9 weeks old and sleeps maybe 3 hours a day, split into 3 naps. His A time is 2 hours, when it should only be 1hr 10-20. They are all so different, its taken me a little while to just accept he isnt a big sleeper. Hope someone comes up with something more helpful than me for you!

How old is your LO, Sandra?

Feex198x - I can guarantee your LO is overtired.  If you want advice, please start a post in the EASY section and I will take a look :)

I think it's probably more like how they cope with the amount of sleep they get.  My dd was a short napper (didn't do bw with her) but slept through the night at a young age and was a happy baby so I didn't worry about it.  Ds1 was a nightmare with short naps!  I went into it with the same attitude as dd and what a mistake that was!  He was constantly OT and woke early and in the night.  I came to BW for help when he was 8 months old and getting him onto long naps was a lifesaver.  Ds2 did nothing but sleep but was on EASY from birth so I'm sure that's why as he's A times were always spot on.  An angel baby you can get away with it more, touchy babies forget it!

Part of it is developmental at this age - the CNing often goes away between 3-6 mths. I'm not sure it is all being overtired or undertired, just the way their little brains are wired at the time, and therefore there is a huge amount of variation between LOs and they are all different.

Both of my LOs were CNers at that age, and both survived on very little sleep. They slept more in total as they got older so something was 'not right' in the early days but there was nothing I could have done to change it at that point. Reflux and wind probably didn't help me  >:( ::).

BUT both ARE low sleep needs. Then both did all the nap transitions early and both have always had longer than average A times.

I remember being on here in the early days and trying trying trying everything to get more sleep, and really they did once they were developmentally able, but did remain low sleep needs.

Oh - and don't underestimate hunger causing short naps - all those GSs in the first 3-4mths don't help!

Karen, my LO is a full blown touchy baby - maybe w/ a hint of spirited.
Liz, it kinda makes sense. With Emma I know she is totally OT - as little as she sleeps. Really hard to get her to sleep longer than 45min. The past 2 days we managed to have her go back to sleep after 45 min and it ended up being a 2 hr nap. I hung dark curtains which I think make a difference... So yep she can....but most of the times she gets up after 45min and has the biggest smile on her face :) and just like yours she also does have a longer A time than other babies her age. She went 2 hrs today before BT and she wasn't even cranky going to bed...

Sandra - That just sounds like a developmentally short napping issue ;)  We had that!  It's frustrating cause you know that they are sooo tired, but extending doesn't often work... they are generally happy, but you know that they are tired...

The good news: naps generally improve naturally around the 6 month mark - DD's did almost overnight!

It is true - we had the short naps start at around 3months and by about 5.5-6 months we started getting longer ones.  Its just a phase we all have to ride out - though not easy with a touchy LO (Sandra - I have one too so I know how they can get!).  Hang in there all of you!

oh ladies, i love reading all that....can't wait than!! 2 more month max hopefully....i have to say though in the past 4 days she napped great in the afternoon - woke up after 45 min but was easily put back to sleep and ended up napping for example today 2.5 hrs....but also that was her last nap of the day and that was 3.00pm..so she went 4 hrs until BT w/o another cn! I paid for it when BT came around and she wouldn't settle and she has already woken 3 times in 3 hrs.
Every day something new... :) and oh yes those touchy babies are something else - my friend has an angel baby - like day and night!
