What happened to his naps? 6 months-advice please
« on: August 04, 2011, 14:10:47 pm »
My baby has been on a 4 hour EASY for a while now. He had a period of very solid naps, his EASY was:

WU: 6-7, stayed in crib till 7
E 7
S 9-1030/11
E 11
S 1-230/3
E 3
BD 6/630

He is eating solids, and really liking it. But he has been very fussy lately, and requires almost constant entertainment. he jsut does not seem happy, and his naps are suffering.
I can't get him to sleep more than 45 minutes in the morning. I have tried shortening and lengthening his A time, but I can't seem to find the magic number. Is it possible he only needs 45 minutes of sleep? He isn't happy, so I'm just not sure what is going on.
His afternoon nap has been ok but not great, its usually at leas an hour.
I'm just not sure what to do, and my sanity is really being tested. Does anyone have any suggestions?? TIA

I think your first A is too short hun...and he is ready to increase it :)
For a 6 month old he does short first and second As (2 hours is more appropriate for a 4 month old)

Maybe try gently increasing his first and second A time by 10 min increments every few days and see if he starts to nap longer. (Do this gently to avoid OT)

There is also a HUGE GS around 6 months and a developmental leap I think so the fussiness could be down to that, and the introduction of solids as well.

Few Questions....
Does he wake from that first nap happy? - If so then def UT.
How are his nights?

He is good at night, sometimes wakes once in the early am, but otherwise not. Even if he is up at 615, 9 is still too early for a nap? He is usually so cranky by then, but I'm not sure if it's tiredness or something else. His big tired sign is rubbing his eyes, but he has not been rubbing his eyes lately at naptimes, but hes been so unhappy, that I just put him in. He sometimes wakes up happy from that short first nap, but not always. i think it may be undertired though, because of the 45 minute thing.

He must be having a growth spurt, his stomach is like a bottomless pit these days.

How long do you think his first and second A times should be?

So are you doing set naptime of 9am at the moment? Or 2hrs45mins from waking? Sorry I am a little confused.

Around this age LOs sometimes show tired signs or crankiness if they are bored, overtinulated or need a change of scene. I find a quick walk around the house will tell me if it is this rather than tiredness.

he wakes up anywhere between 6-7, so I start looking for tired signs around 9. lately he's been going in around 915-925, but the naps are still short. I think I may be putting him in too early, and boredom/overstimulation may be the culprit. A lot of times, if he is super fussy around 9, I assume it is tiredness, but I guess I really need to wait until he starts the eye rubbing.
