How much sleep for 2 yr old?
« on: July 01, 2012, 19:45:22 pm »
I'm back again!

Just wondering how much sleep your lo had at 2 yrs? My lo is 2yrs 2 mths and I really don't think she's getting enough sleep.
A couple of months ago our routine was:
Wake up 6 ish
Nap 12.30-1 for for 1.5 to 2 hours
Bed time 7.15 would chat in her cot for up to 1 hr,maybe more. Always asleep by 8.30
So she was getting about 10 hrs at night & 2 hrs during the days - she always looked tired to me!

Last month we went on holiday and naps just went out of the window! But I did notice the nights were longer. But after a week of no naps we had major OT which took us a while to get out of!

Now we are getting nap resistance! But I'm praying she's too young to drop her nap. I'm due with dd2 in 4 weeks and really NEED her to keep this nap!

Our day looks like:
Wake up 6-6.30
Nap: put her down at 1 ish. She will nap about 5 days out of 7. I wake her after 1h-1h15 and always by 3. She will happily chat in her cot for 1.5 hours if she doesn't nap
Bed time 7.15-7.30 (7 if no nap) ,  asleep by 8

So we are getting 10-11 hrs at night and 1 hr during the day. Is that enough? She does look tired and I would like to get more night time sleep out of her!

Any suggestions for a routine tweak? Or should I be happy?!

Will she go down any earlier for her nap? My dd is 24.5mo and if she was up at 6 she would be ready to nap at about 11 lol! But I'd push her til 12, let her sleep 1.5 hours, bed at 7 (personally)
Blessed mum to two home-birthed darling water babies

hey you with the pretty face, welcome to the human race

Hello Honey,

Well believe me I know where you are coming from. DS started with BT resistance a few weeks ago even though I already cut his nap gradually back from 2 hours to 1. So we went no nap. His nights started out at 13 and slowly over 3 weeks went down to 11. He took a few naps in that time but every nap robs night time sleep, and this is where we are right now.

I don't think 12 hours is enough TBH Hun, but what I have learned recently is that what your plan of action is depends very much on the temperament of your LO. Some LO (like DS Sam who is 'Angel') can take no nap days and remain happy. Others simply can't get through the day without a nap and will melt down in the afternoon unless they've had one. The parents of the latter type of Toddler have to stick with a nap and accept the shorter nights, for an interim period until the LO can handle no nap. The 1-0 transition can take some time.

My advice to you would be to cut the nap back to 45 and see where it gets you. Putting down at BT later gets a better result/quicker settling time. If no joy then I'm sorry to say  :-X there is no other choice but to go no nap, with some nap days thrown in here and there when she needs on/will take one. With Sam he doesn't get more sleep in 24 hours when he naps but it helps him feel better to spread the sleep on that day IYKWIM  ???

I hope this is helpful somehow  :-\ but quite honestly the 1-0 is a really tricky transition and I am also still trying to figure out the best way for DS to get through it (see my own thread  ::)) as are dozens of other Mammy's on the Toddler Sleep forum right now

There is a 1-0 support thread if you'd like to join  ;)

Other than that all I have to say is CONGRATULATIONS on your pregnancy and I'm sorry the timing of this is bad for you  :'( I bet you could scream!

(HUGS)

Thanks for such quick replies!
Charlibob - nursery naps are 12.30-1 so I've tried to stick with that. She's always so awake at that time id struggle to get her to sleep sooner unless I took her on a drive (but then I'd only get 45 -60'min nap max in the car & I can't be doing that soon!)
Vicki - I'm living in denial at the mo and praying this is not the start of the dreaded 1-0. She's too young!!!! sorry to hear your having similar issues! I've always thought she was a high sleep needs child. We suffer with major nw's when OT. Tbh she can easily go the whole day without a nap. She stays surprisingly happy with a bit of quiet story or TV time thrown in. But it's the OT nw's I can't handle! They last for about 1.5-2hrs and then the OT mess just continues.
I guess I'm struggling to figure out what the chatting before BT means. She was blatantly OT at BT tonight yet we had 30 mins singing 'wind the bobbin up' before she finally went silent. but I know it can be UT too. Still have 1 molar to come too so I'm always on the look out!
Aaaarrrrggggghhhhhh - wish I had an easy sleeper. Sleep has ALWAYS been our issue. Fingers crossed DD2 is a better sleeper!

but I know it can be UT too.

WRT this ^. What I have found with Sam is that even when he is OT the UT from that day over rides it, so you have to consider that first and foremost. The behaviour he he displays now at 2 years old has turned a lot of things on their head  :(.

I'm living in denial at the mo and praying this is not the start of the dreaded 1-0. She's too young!!!!

Me too ^ I was not ready or prepared for this, Sam was 2 at the end of January so this started around 2 years 4 months. My plan was to shorten the nap and push it later until he no longer napped at 3 years old and then he would sleep 13 hours through every night!  ::).

I guess I'm struggling to figure out what the chatting before BT means.

If you put her down later I will wager this will stop ^. It's UT from a decent length nap....Sam needs 7 hours A time to go down straight away if he has a nap of 1 hour or more and he has to be up by 2.30 latest siiigh  :'(.

I hope you can get her settled before baby arrives  ;)

x.
