NW what should I do?
« on: August 22, 2011, 09:48:42 am »
My DS is 8.5months old, he now goes down for naps and to bed fairly quickly using PUPD. We decided to try to cut out NF also using PUPD, sone nights he'll wake several times, especially if he's OT from poor day naps, but every night without fail he will wake between 2-3 and he will cry for upto 2 hours before he goes back to sleep.
We put him to bed between 6.30-7.30 depending on how well his day time naps go and have been trying to use an age appropriate cut off of 8-9 hours before feeding him, but if he wakes at 2 he is too early for a feed, I'm not sure though if he is actually hungry or if this is just a habit?? But this night waking has been consistent over a couple of weeks. I did feed him at this time once as he had been sick before bed so I knew he would be hungry earlier, this may have confused him.
What should I do? Do you think he's hungry or it's just a habit?

It is hard to say.  What is his routine like.  Can you post it in EAS format?  Is anything else going on?  Teething?

Our day is roughly like this
E 6.00 breastfeed
E 7.30 breakfast solids
A
S 9.00 he may sleep for an hour, but it's normally 30mins, I then go back in and try to put him back to sleep either by PUPD or AP, today HR slept til 10.15 with 5 mins of PUPD at 9.30
E 10.30 bottle and snack
A
E 12.00 lunch solids
S 2.00 WT is usually 3-3.5 hrs PUPD takes longer and he doesn't seem tired, this nap is usually 30mins, I'm trying to extend this nap
E 3.00 bottle and snack
A 6.00 bath
S 6.30 sleep - we put him to bed as early as possible but his rubbish naps mean we are putting him down earlier and the earlier we put him to bed the earlier he wakes the next day. The long NW means we start the day OT and the rubbish naps mean he goes to bed OT 
He could be teething, but I think that he wakes up for a feed and won't settle as he is holding out hoping I'll feed him.
He is also almost walking he can take a few steps on his own now, but this waking has been going on for a while.
Do you think I should feed him and hope he drops the feed himself.

Forgot dinner solids at 5pm in my EASY. Also HR should read 'he'.

Do you think you maybe need more A time for that first nap to get a longer one? That way you wouldn't have to do PU/PD for so long?

From what you described, it seems your LO is OT at bt and it also seems by the long NW teething.  Have you tried medicating for teeth to see if it helps?

I understand how frustrating it is to have an early BT and early wake up.  But for us, early bt helped with OT.
