Am I using shh as a prop??
« on: August 23, 2011, 12:50:16 pm »
Have been using shh/pat for 5days now with some success she has gone from sleeping for no more than 5 mins in a Moses basket at a time to sleeping 30-45 mins in a black out room in her crib. My question is she really won't self sooth at all during the day she generally crys a bit when I put her in her crib (well generally crys as soon as I swaddle her) I never know if it's best to try and get her calm first although she tends to squirm and get frustrated! As soon as I shh and hold in crib she is normally calm within 5mins. My husband worries that we have just swapped rocking for shhing?? Will this help her to eventually sooth herself or will we be shhing for ever!

'
My other question is she always wakes up after 30-45 mins if I shh her she goes back to sleep but it takes me about 35mins for this to happen (she is not crying during this process just dozing on & off but keeps waking up. Am I shhing for too long should I wait for the full out cry before I try &calm again. She normal wakes up again after 30mins. Will this eventually lead to extended naps??

30mins-45mins-sleep
35mins-shhing
30 mins- sleep

Any advise welcome as were starting to loose hope, I feel like a hermit as when I take her out it seems to make it worse when trying to get her back in her crib

Hi there :)

Don't worry, you won't be doing it forever. It's a process, her learning to self-soothe and she's not going to master it in only 5 days. You've already made AMAZING progress in such a short time!!

Have you tried holding through the jolts? That might help you with the 30/45 min problem.  There is some info in this link -
