10 month old and naps gone wonky
« on: August 21, 2011, 12:16:53 pm »
DD is 10mo old and has been pretty consistent in being able to stay awake 2.5-3 hours before her first nap and then 3-3.5 hours before her second nap and bedtime.  She always slept for an hour to an hour 15 for both naps.

We have done sleep training over the past 10 days and she was doing really well up until yesterday.  There was some regression and crying but I'm usually able to settle her in the crib unless it is a NW and then I usually have to pick up but she has only been having one NW for a bottle then back to sleep until morning.

So I'm wondering if she needs more A time.  If that is the case then there won't be time in the day for her to have her two naps.  I was wondering what I should do.  Yesterday she took a 45 minute morning nap and woke on her own.  So I thought for sure she would be really tired for her afternoon nap but she talked to herself forever and then still only slept for about an hour.  She went right down at bedtime as well.

So should I try to push the morning nap out?  If I do and still get a short nap what do I do then?  I'm so confused.

Have you read this thread yet?  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=95670.0

Her A times do look quite short so you'll prob have to start making them a bit longer.  You have two options, a shorter am/longer pm nap or a longer am/shorter pm nap.  What do you think you'd prefer to work towards?  Having done both I think I prefer the short am nap as I started getting pm nap refusal with ds2 way before he was ready for one nap and I let him sleep as long as he wanted in the mornings!  With ds1 I did short am/long pm and it worked much better.  I couldn't do it with ds2 though due to the three school runs a day I had to do!

Well I think I'd like the long am nap because she will be in daycare in 3 weeks and she has a school run as well.  She will be doing the run from 8am till approx 9am (it is a long walk) and then has to leave by 2:30 to pick up DD1 and another little boy.

I'm actually wondering if she is starting the 2-1.  This morning I had her up for 3.5 hours before I tried to get her to nap.  She cried more (she has been doing that the past few days) and when I just sat in the room she just stood up and talked away.  She didn't seem tired at all so then at 4 hours I knew she had to nap whether she liked it or not.  She couldn't go for more than 4 hours after only being able to do 2.5-3 hours before.  Not to mention she was getting clumsy and crying more.  I did end up having to resort to bouncing her to sleep on the yoga ball.  I think maybe 3.75 hours would have been better but since she fell and hit her head (has learned to climb the stairs  ::) )  I wanted to keep an eye on her for at least 30 minutes.  She seemed fine but whiny.

Anyway, since she went down at 11:30 I'm hoping I'll get 2 hours but then not sure what to do about bedtime.  If I get 2 hours then she'll be up by 1:30 and there is no way she can make it until her 7:45 bedtime.  Maybe I aim for a 6:30 bedtime if that is the case.  It is so hard to know.  :(

I managed to get her to sleep for 2.25 hours.  I had to go in at the 1.25 hour mark and bounce/rock her back to sleep but I managed to get her to sleep for another hour.  I guess I'll just attempt a one nap day and see if she can make it until 6:30.  That will be almost 5 hours though.  We'll see.

How's she been getting on?  Have you had much success with a long/short nap yet?

Nope.  Not yet.  For two days she refused the am nap.  She made it about 5 hours both days.  The day before yesterday she had just about 2 hours and then a cat nap of 45 minutes and still a terrible night.  Yesterday she was up 5 hours and then napped for just short of 2 hours and only had that one nap.  She also had a bad night but not as bad.  Yesterday night we noticed that she was rubbing at her mouth a lot so I'm sure there is teeth coming.

Today was totally different.  She was back to her old routine.  Was up for 3 hours before the first nap and slept for an hour and then up for about 3 hours and slept for an hour 15.  She is sooooooo cranky though.  I guess I'll have to see how it goes tonight and then just wait until this tooth comes through and go from there.

Are you giving meds before naps?  Hope those teeth come through for you soon.

I am.  Last night was soooo bad.  I can't believe it.  I can't even count how many times she woke up and I had medicated her.  I can't believe how hard a time she has with teeth.  I had just done sleep training with her and we'd been through about a week and she was doing so well and now this.  The only way I can get her to sleep is to rock her.  It is just crazy.

She has the bottom two and the top left is the one coming in now.  I think it is just about to break through.  I can see it.  I just can't believe how hard a time she has with it.  :(
