from 2 naps down to 1
« on: September 23, 2011, 02:02:34 am »
I was just wondering when the 2 to 1 naps happen?  DS has an am nap but for his pm nap he wont sleep anymore.. he just quietly plays for about 45 mins before he has had enough and wants out.  So if he is transitioning to 1 nap how would I go about doing that?  I would like the nap to be balanced so he doesnt go soo long without sleeping from the am nap to bedtime.  Any input would be great! Thanks!

Hi there, the transition is generally anywhere from 12-18 months, so makes sense your LO seems to be starting it. So does he take a long AM nap now? In order to get a shorter PM nap you may need to capping the morning one slightly. Or you can do it the other way around and give him a short AM nap that you cap to say 30 mins, then a longer PM nap. Do you want to post your routine so we can have a look? Also check out this support thread if you like:

Hey sorry it took so long to reply!
This is what our day looks like:

wake 630
breakfast 730
snack 930
sleep 1015

wake 1130
lunch 1215
snack 230
nap 3

wake 4... will not let him sleep past 4
dinner 5
bed routine 630
bottle 7
bed 730

sometimes he sleeps until 7am and then I usually just push back the naps by 20 mins or a half hour.. but will still have him wake up by 4
and if he wakes at 7am then he usually doesnt nap in the pm and will just play quietly in the crib for 30mins... i dont mind! lol

So is he STTN? To be honest, although your routine isn't "text book" if it works I would stick to it!! What you can try doing is capping his morning nap, first at 45 mins, then 30 mins, and trying for a longer PM nap. So something like:

A 6.30am
S 10-10.45
S 1.30-3.30

Something like that?
