Swaddle Weaning - and now we have 30 minute naps!! Help
« on: October 20, 2011, 19:30:38 pm »
I'm in the process (day 2) of no swaddle with my 4.5 month old LO. She is breaking out of it constantly...all night...then knocking her pacifier ...waking up... fighting the swaddle...I've tried double swaddling and that worked for 2 weeks and now she breaks out of that too. I'm at my wits end...

She can roll both ways... so we decided to drop the swaddle last night. She cried some but we did shh/pat and that calmed her. She fell asleep and had more night wakings then normal - but fell back asleep pretty quick.  I have been putting her down...and using shh/pat as needed all day today. She is going down quicker and quicker... but her naps are only 30 minutes long now.

What should I do?

She is still on a 3 hour easy because she has reflux and seems to eat smaller more frequent meals... Also - she, before the swaddle weaning, was napping exactly 45 minutes...even with playing with WTs (shorter - longer, etc.).

This was her day today:

NIGHT 1 (of no swaddle)
Put to sleep at 7pm
9:30pm - Wake. Went ahead and fed - as it had been 3 hours. Went back to sleep with small amoutn of fussing (2 minutes).
11:40pm - Wake. Waited 10 minutes. Fell back asleep.
12:00am - Wake - fed...because it had been almost 3 hours.
2:30am - Wake. Waited 10 minutes. Fell back asleep.
2:50am - Wake - Fed - because it had been almost 3 hours.
5:45am - Wake - Fed - because it had been almost 3 hours.
7:00am - Wake. Treated it as morning wake up time...Small feeding... started our day.
So I fed her 1 more time then normal (normally feed 10pm/1am/4am) - but she woke up alot more then normal...as she would wake up/fuss/fall back asleep...but then get up again 15/20 minutes later and I would just feed her...

NAP 1
WT was 1hr 35 min before PD
7:00-8:35am - WT - then read a book while rocked, sang lullaby a few minutes while swaying.
8:40 - Put down (no swaddle or paci).
8:40 - 9:15 (35 minutes)- Cried. Used shh/pat
9:15 - 9:50am (35 minutes) - Very short nap
10:00am - Eat/BF
NAP 2
WT was 1hr 35 min before PD
11:25-11:50 (25 minutes)- Put down (no swaddle/paci). Cried - used pat/shh
11:50 - 12:15 (25 minutes) - Sleep. Waited 10 minutes after she woke up to see if would go back to sleep - but no...
1:00pm - Feed/BF
NAP 3
WT was 1hr 50 min before PD
2:05pm - 2:14pm - Put down (no swaddle/paci/put in sleepsack). Cried (10 minutes). Used pat/shh.
2:14pm -2:45pm - Sleep. (30 minutes).
245pm - Wake....

HELP!

Have you snuck in at ~25mins to see what she is doing when she wakes. She may have the 30min jolts. Some LOs get these as they come out of deep sleep into light sleep during their first sleep cycle. My DS got them quite bad and I had to go back to swaddling for naps. The jolts never really affected our nights but if they are for you maybe you could try weaning the swaddle slower ie 1 arm out for a week then into a sleep sack? ... I do think your nights will probably come right without the swaddle pretty quick, but naps are always a challenge between 3-6months.

If she is jolting awake then you can try HTTJ to help her through this, or W2S at ~22min mark. (Sometimes takes some trial and error) :-*

Thank for the the advice. I will read up...I tried W2S and HTTJ for her 45 minute naps but never succeeded with either.

I did decide to give her back the pacifier...she still can't find her fingers well enough (apparently) as when I gave it to her she knocked out in two seconds (even unswaddled). I'll tackle paci dependence later I guess if it becomes and issue.

I hope things keep getting better over the next few days...
