Dreamfeed help
« on: October 29, 2011, 15:37:54 pm »
Hi! I've been trying the DF since my lo was born, he is now 15 weeks old, but it isn't working.  With DS1, as soon as we introduced the DF, he started STTN.  He took around 4 oz at the DF and that was enough for STTN.
With Maurice (DS2), eveything is different.  He goes to bed at around 8 pm, and his last feed is at 7.30 pm, he takes between 5-6 oz at that time, then DH offers the DF at around 10:30 pm, but Maurice only drinks 1 oz, or sometimes not even 1 oz.  We have tried to do it 30 min earlier and 30 min later, but it still doesn't work.  He won't take more than 1 oz.
Here's our feeding schedule:

7.15 am 4 oz
11.30 am 4 oz
3.30 pm 5 oz
7.30 pm 5-6 oz
10.30 pm DF 1 oz
NF at around 3.30 am 2 oz (I only offer 2 oz and then use the pacifier b/c if DS drinks more than 2 oz then he totally refuses the 7 am bottle)

We are in a 4 hr EASY b/c if we did the 3.5 hr routine he wasn't hungry enough, so he only drank 2 oz at each bottle.

I don't know what to do so that he drinks the DF, or if it is not working, then should I stop offering it and wait for my lo to STTN when he is ready?

Thanks for your help and advice!

I would think a DF that small really isn't worth doing to be honest. My kids were both very poor DFers so we stopped and just fed them when they woke. I would stop doing it and see what happens!

His formula intake is on the low side though - have you tried a faster or vari flow teat to get him to drink a bit more?

Thanks Laura! I tried a vari flow teat, but it was too fast for him, he started choking! He is using # 3 of the avent bottles, may be I should try #4 which is a little bit faster.  I'll try it and see what happens.

It's worth a try! If you tried the Avent variflow that is a fast one, it was fast even with the thickened reflux formula my kids were on! We had Tommee Tippee closer to nature bottles before Avent and that variflow doesn't drip before they suck so it's more controlled.
