NW due to SA ?
« on: November 17, 2011, 16:59:03 pm »
Hello my DD is almost 9mo and i'm starting to wonder if SA may play a role in her NW... and most importantly, how to fix it !

She has no problem falling asleep - independently, it's the staying asleep part that's a problem...

She normally wakes a few times per night and resettles herself.  Although, she also wakes once around 4am when she's really crying out...  I can usually resettle her within 5 min and she's back asleep.. for a whole 10 min... then she cries out again... and in i go.. and the cycle repeats up to 6-7 times like this over 60 to 90 minutes... really frustrating !!!

i settle her in her crib putting a hand on her chest and sometimes i give her a few ounces of water if she's really upset... pupd if things go out of control, but i rarely need to use it.. i try not to pick her up and keep the interaction to a minimum..
i'm wondering if she just needs me in her room... we've tried with dh settling her, but the same happens...
i don't know how to address these multiple, clustered wakings... should i spend more time and interaction with her ? less ?? i ignore them if she's just chatting, but they always escalate to full out crying...

Any ideas on how to deal with this ?  is she too young for SA ?
Many thanks !

This almost sounds like she might be a little UT at bedtime... or maybe OT - both can cause troubles around 4-5am with NW.

Could you post her typical day in EAS format?

Hi Kara and thanks for your reply !
This is our typical EASY...

Wake 6h30-7h
E : bottle 6oz and solids 1hr later
A of 2h45... i've tried extending this A-time.. she doesn't tolerate more.. and has very reliable tired signs..
S : 9h30-10h for 1.5hr
EA 11h bottle 6oz and solids 1hr later
S 14h for 1.5h, sometimes 45min...
EA approx 15h (only takes 4oz)
A solids 17h30
BT routine, 6oz bottle and asleep by 18h45-19h

The one problem i know i have is if she only has a short nap in the afternoon and i can't extend it, the last A-time is way long.. although she tolerates it well and doesn't get very grumpy..
Also, she'll start daycare full-time next week and the afternoon nap over there is set at 13h.. shifting more A-time to the last part of the day.. i don't have a choice as she's the youngest and only one on 2 naps schedule.. don't know how she'll react to that !

NW were always around 3h30.. i've just started W2S and it pushed the NW one hour later, to 4h30, but we still have the same problem with clustered wakes over 1h to 1.5hr... this morning she actually never went back to sleep and after 2hr of crying, i decided to start the day at 6h30..

Let me know what you think... maybe all i need is a few tweaks in our easy !

Well, i would suggest pushing her PM nap about 15 mins later to see if that extends her nap, but since the daycare requires her to nap at 1pm, you might have to ask that they wake her or put her down a bit earlier to cause her to take a shorter UT nap in the AM.

This one is a bit tricky with the daycare issue - gonna move you to the naps section since she is still young enough that we NEED to have her take two a day...  I'm not very good at the technical bits of nap capping and such :)
