Not sleeping from 1st MOLAR?
« on: October 17, 2011, 12:06:08 pm »
I can not remember my first daughter having such issues with teething but our LO who is almost 14 months may be working on her first molars, that is the ONLY thing I can think of that may be causing so many NWs. For the last 2 weeks, our LO has been waking up SCREAMING in pain, we don't need to pick her up, we just "shhhhh" her or rub her back, but she usually wakes back up again and again. The only nights when she wakes less often are nights we medicate, which leads me to believe she is cutting her first molars. (It is not an ear infection)

So, my question to you is, how long did the misery last for you? Other than alternating Tylenol and Ibprophen what else did we do?

I do not want her to pick up a bad habit of needing comfort every time she wakes after this passes.

hi there, I haven't experienced this with teething I must admit. Your poor LO! Have you tried teething gel/granules?

Teething gel is a big no no now.....article came out months ago saying that it was dangerous for babies because of the chance of numbing the tongue and causes suffocation. Even some adults are not supposed to use it due to it having a particular reaction with blood pressure.

DD had teething problems for months and caused horrible EW (horrible from me as I was knackered from being pg with LO#2).

She was funny from 11 months until teeth finally came out at about 16 months or thereabouts. It was horrible for her as she had only had 2 teeth until then and then all of a sudden she got 4 molars and 6 incisors all at the same time. Her canines came through later but didn't cause as much trouble. But there was a point at the end of January last year when she had 3 sleepless nights and just cried and there was nothing we could do to comfort her.

I know that bonjela is a big no no for babies but I think baby teething gels are safe aren't they?

This was the warning that went out in May of this year:

Are you holding a teething baby right now ... or one that may be teething soon? We've got another warning about something we all thought was safe. The FDA issued a warning about benzocaine, which is found in Orajel, Anbesol, and other over-the-counter meds used to help soothe those gums and mouths of babies cutting their first teeth.

The FDA says benzocaine may cause a rare, serious, and possibly fatal condition called methemoglobinemia, which reduces the amount of oxygen carried the bloodstream.

We have the signs of methemoglobinemia and what you should do if you have a teething baby at home.

Here is what we know:

1. The FDA is telling parents and caregivers not to use products with benzocaine on children under 2, except when under the care of a doctor.

2. If you do have to use something with the ingredient on your child, use as little as possible and no more than four times a day.

3. There have been 21 cases of methemoglobinemia in adults and children after using a product with benzocaine.

4. Don't know what to look for? Here are the signs of methemoglobinemia: pale, gray, or blue colored skin, lips, and nail beds; shortness of breath; fatigue; confusion; headache; lightheadedness; and rapid heart rate. The symptoms usually occur within minutes of applying a product with benzocaine to 1 to 2 hours after use.

5. It doesn't matter if you have used Orajel or another product with benzocaine without side effects. Methemoglobinemia can occur after using a product with benzocaine for the first time OR if you have already used it before, so this is cause for concern at any time.

6. If you think your child may have the signs of methemoglobinemia, call 911 and get medical attention immediately.

Yeah, this is scary stuff. There are ways to help your teething baby without using over-the-counter products. Gently rub his gums, massaging the tender spots often helps. What helped my kiddo the most? A plastic teething ring stashed in the fridge; the cold helped numb her sensitive mouth

Yes, my DD went through a terrible sleeping time around the age of 15 months.  I think for 6 weeks she was up crying every night (oddly, crying in her sleep sometimes).  She only had 2 teeth, maybe 4.  At her well check up the doctor told us nothing was wrong, she was manipulating us (yeah, we fired that doctor).  But sure enough 2 days later DD was hanging upside down playing in DH's arms and I saw it through her giggles... a MOLAR!  I swear once that thing poked through she slept better again.

DS, also went through a bad sleep patch around the same age but it was never as specific a moment as it was with DD (meaning, I think it was more general rather then just one buggar of a tooth).

Good luck!!

Mum-of-Two: thanks. I stuck my finger in last night to see if I could feel anything, and nothing really stood out.

But I am not discounting it as an option. I am just wondering because she is not "getting better" with medication like she does with her other teeth. Other teeth can take 1-2 weeks to come through and we have to medicate her for maybe a night or two but she still sleeps well, maybe 1 NW, not 4-7 NW like the last 2 weeks.

have you tried amber teething necklace? I swear it's helped mine. The redness has gone down.

I have seen mentions of that amber necklace, not sure if I want to try it with her because she chews the living lights out of everything and hates anything around her neck.

Wow, it has been almost a month since I wrote the last post. Well, lets see. 12 days ago she got a bacterial sinus infection and has a temp of 103-104 for 4.5 days until the antibiotics kicked in. The 3 days before that, so 15 days ago, she was sleeping like a dream. Then got sick and had really bad nights with that fever. Now that she is off the meds, her sinuses are draining so she wakes from that, but not as bad.

But on the teeth side, nothing has come through but she is chewing and drooling like crazy, so something sure is taking a long painful time to come out.

Veru true! As a matter fact, a friend that is pharmacist told me to never use those products on my child.. they can numb the oral cavity and the throat, the child might not be able to control/feel the deglutition.. i tried it on myself and i was shocked by how my throat felt after.. definitely NO NO!
