iron rich foods apart from red meat?

DS does not eat much meat. He will eat chicken, sausages and ham but that is about it. What do you give your lo's to ensure they get enough iron?

Blackstrap molasses too.  I'm also looking for iron foods that F will eat. He's hit and miss with meat these days.  Oh and beans Becky - will Henry eat chili?  I find that to be a good way to get heme and non-heme iron in one go!

you know - his absolute favourite food is baked beans but not sure he would try kidney beans...worth a try though. I love molasses and have it on porridge but he won't go for it.

Dark green leafy veg are all high in iron and if you want to make doubly-sure he's getting lots of iron, give him something citrusy alongside (drink of OJ or a piece of orange to eat).  If he likes mashed potato, then cheesy mash with spinach and cheese can be a good bet.  Chard lasagne is also a good one. 

For grown-ups, I hear red wine and dark chocolate are both full of iron.  And I want to believe!

It's one of the reasons I still give him fortified cereals.  Otherwise we'd be hard pressed to meet his iron needs.  He just doesn't eat enough of those foods to cover it.  He won't eat anything green and leafy - in fairness to him he will suck the dressing off salad but spits out the greens lol.

I've heard dried apricots are a source of iron but I've also heard meat sources are richer and more easily absorbed sources of iron than vegetables.

Have you tried making sauces with beef or lamb mince?  You can increase the amount of vegetables so it's only a small amount; also if you slow cook the mince it makes it really soft so if it's a textural thing it's not a problem.

Alternatively have you tried making a bolognaise and then pureeing it and mixing with pasta?  You could start with a small amount of meat in the sauce and build it up?  (Then he might not spot it.)

Or even pork off as chicken?  But tbh any meat contains some iron, just red meat has a bit more iron than white meat.
