Cutting out middle of the night feed?
« on: November 18, 2011, 13:17:09 pm »
Hello, our little girl has been a good sleeper, going down at night and after night feeds well, most of the time. She was 9 lb 6 at birth, will be 8 weeks tomorrow and has fed well from the beginning. (for other details scroll to bottom)

The book tells me that she should be going for a long stretch at night now, possibly even sleeping through til 5 or 6 am. However, she wakes every night between 2 and 3 seeming genuinely hungry - she wont accept just a cuddle, the dummy or cool boiled water and feeds enthusiastically for 5 - 15 minutes (still not a full feed even though she seems hungry). She then usually goes straight back to sleep until between 5 and 6.15 am. At this point she still roots as if she is hungry but is not particularly interested in food when on the breast (feeding for only 5-10 mins). She still seems really tired and sometimes falls asleep as I carry her to the nursing chair, sp I know she's not really ready to start the day. Again, she won't be calmed with a dummy or shush pat.
We put her to bed at 7 every night and she naps about 3 1/2 - 4 hours in the day, never past 5 pm. We have done cluster feeding (though she turns 8 weeks tomorrow and I know it's recommended to stop at 8 weeks) and a dream feed every night (taking 130ml ish of expressed milk at this feed.)
I am really hoping to cut out the 3 am feed, even if only pushing it to 5 or 6am if that's what she can manage (and Tracey says that's quite normal at this stage). Or should I aim to cut out the 6am waking instead and keep the 3 am feed for now??

Any advice would be much appreciated! I know we could have it a lot worse at 8 weeks, but if she can manage to sleep longer I want to help her to do that!

Thanks!

How old is your child? 8 weeks tomorrow
What’s his/her daily routine? wakes around 6 -morning nap 9.15-9.45/10,
Do you bottle or breastfed?? breastfed
How much? or how long? it varies. she feeds for usually about 25 mins, sometimes (not often) up to 45
If breastfed.. one side or both?? (at each feed) usually both
How many wakes per night? one between 2 and 3am, one between 5 and 6.15am
What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up? feeds and unless suffering from wind goes almost straight back to sleep.
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry? crying, kicking, squirming
What have you tried to settle?? won't take dummy or cool boiled water, keeps crying if cuddled (or back to sleep on me then wakes crying when put back down)
What do you do for A time and how long is it? she loves her bouncer (just normal wire framed seat) she observes a lot, sometimes i sing her songs etc. She stays awake up to 2 hours, usually only 1 and a half
Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones? don't think so
Do they have a prop? If so what is it? no
Do they have a lovie? no

At 8 weeks, there is no way I'd even try weaning the NF for a ebf bub.  She's just so little yet, and it's really, really common to have NFs at this age (3- including the df is completely normal).  The book isn't always the best guide on that issue.  She needs those extra calories.  Remember, she's only going 3 hrs during the day, and her tummy is still really tiny, so it's just not realistic to expect her to go much longer at night.

Our dd1 had 2 NFs (DF +1) til 8 mos.  She dropped the NF at about 4.5 mos, and the DF at 8 mos.  Our dd2 dropped one NF at 7 mos and still has the 2nd (she's 9 mos), a DF never worked for her.

FWIW my daughter was 9lb 7oz at birth and I thought she'd be doing long stretches early on, but she would sometimes go through to 4/5am from DF, or waking at 2/3am depending on how hungry she was. (she was EBM at that stage too.) I just had to follow her lead. BFs at night were only ever 5-10m long and straight back to sleep.

These first few months are very variable, with growth spurts etc. As much as the book is really useful, Michelle is right in saying that it doesn't always work out that way! I think in the book, Tracy assumes that a big baby at birth will continue on it's growth curve, and have more capacity for the milk - but what I found with my DD was that she was big at birth, but very quickly levelled off at the 50th centile and found her natural curve.

Hopefully it should start to push on to 4,5 am soon enough, and from that stage you can start working on dropping that feed and gradually holding her off til your morning feed.

Hi, totally agree with the advice from the ladies here. Your DD is still really young and soon enough she will start to go longer in the night between feeds, when she is ready to drop the feeds she will let you know by sleeping longer.

Thanks so much everyone :)  That's reassuring. When the book says she should be sleeping through or at least getting much closer by now I worried I was doing something wrong - reassuring to know that it's completely normal. Last night at the 3am bf I made sure I gave her a full feed, waking her a couple of times when she fell asleep on the job and she slept til 7.10am instead of 5-6am - great!

Brilliant. xxx :)
It feels like an age when you're going through the NWs / Night feeds, but when they are consistently sleeping through and you look back, this baby stage passes in the blink of an eye. My DD is 5m old today - can't believe where the time has gone!

Don't forget, Tracy's definition of sleeping through is about 6 hours rather than what we all think of as a full night's sleep... So you're probably not far off that anyway! xxx

wonderful!!!  I just noticed that my first response was a bit terse :(  sorry about that - the hazards of typing with a sick bub on your lap and a nonstop talking preschooler in your ear.....

She sounds like she's doing really great at night.  And Rachel is right, this baby stage goes by sooooo fast, so enjoy the cuddles that come with the bfing, even in the middle of the night.  We have the rest of our lives to sleep :)
