Help! 10.5 month old taking short naps!
« on: November 22, 2011, 05:57:53 am »
Hi there. My son Jacob has always taken short naps. We will go through short phases where he will lengthen a nap on his own, but for the most part, his naps are always 40 minutes long. It's getting to the point were he's refusing a nap all together (like this morning), and I can't get him to settle at all. By his dinner time, he's an overtired mess and looks like a zombie!

Our EASY generally looks like this:

E: 6am - wake/BF
E: 7am - breakfast/solids
A:
S: Generally goes down between 8am - 8.30am for 40 minutes
A:
E: 11am - lunch/solids then BF
A:
S: Generally goes down again between 12.30pm - 1pm for 40 minutes.
A:
E: 3pm - afternoon tea/solids then BF
By 3.30pm - 4pm he is tired, rubbing eyes, grizzling etc, but he will NOT go down for another sleep.
A:
E: 5.30pm - dinner/solids
A: 6pm - bath, then another BF before bed
S: 6.30pm
Once in bed for the night, he always wakes after 40 minutes, but a little cuddle from me puts him back to sleep really easily.

I did work out that over stimulation was one of our issues a few months back, so tried to wind him down more before each nap which helped to settle him much better, but now that he is on the move and all over the place it's hard to get him to sit still long enough for a story/cuddles!

When he wakes after 40 minutes, he's happy, plays in his cot with his toys or will stand up and 'talk' away to the door (where he knows I will come back in!). I have tried just going in and laying him back down again, but he'll just stand up straight away! He won't get really upset for at least 10 - 30 minutes after he has woken up (I just leave him until he really demands my attention!).

He is generally sleeping pretty well at night. We'll have 3-4 good nights, followed by a couple of nights of him waking at least once. A nappy change and cuddle from me seems to be all that is needed to get him back to sleep.

Any suggestions?!

It sounds to me like he's UT for the first nap at least, he just hasn't been awake long enough to need a longer nap. 2 - 2.5 hours is a really short A time for 10.5 months.  My LO has been doing 3hr15 and I'm just this week pushing it to 3hr30.

Then with the afternoon nap being so early, he's probably OT by BT. If you could slowly push that first A out to more like 3 - 3.5 hours, I think you'd be more likely to get a good nap, and then your second nap would be later so no OT at BT

Of course, if you do lengthen both naps, he's probably at the stage when you need to start capping one of them anyway - have you seen this link?

But I'd work on pushing that first A time first, and see how you go.

Okay, this was our EASY this morning:

WU: 5am. As this was earlier than normal, I BF him, changed nappy and put him back to bed.
WU: 7am. Solids/BF
A:
S: Now this is where I didn't know what to do... By 8.15am, he was grizzling, and rubbing eyes, but he had only been awake for just over an hour! So I keep him up a bit longer and tried to have him asleep by 9am (two hours after he woke up), but he was way more difficult to settle and didn't go to sleep until 9.30am. Then of course, he was OT and only slept 30 minutes.

What should I do now? Continue trying to get him to sleep again? I keep lying him down in his cot, and he just stands up again.

The grizzlig at 1 hr. do you think this could be boredom? OS? I agree with Nuala he needs much longer than 2 hrs A really for his age, those naps are likely to be UT rather OT but he is OT by the end of the day because of short naps.

Try to gently increase that first A time to 3 hours over time. You may need to increase every 3 days 10-15 mins or so? If you get a short nap then the next A wil need to be shorter, but if you get a good nap you can increase the next A too. ;)

Thanks for the advise. Have been on holiday as we got married, so have only just checked this. Still not having much luck. Today he woke at 5.45am, went back down at 8.45am, but again a 30 minute nap. I've started a new post on the EASY forum to try and keep it all in the same place, as I couldn't find this post yesterday!

Congratulations :)
Lets lock this thread for now and link it to your EASY thread http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=222426.msg2389956#msg2389956 if that is okay! :-*
