need an opinion about DD getting up in the morning on her own
« on: December 08, 2011, 02:01:27 am »
So DD1 is 3 is January and she has made the transition to a BGB wonderfully.  So wonderfully that she has never even gotten out of it on her own and waits for us to get her in the morning.  If we don't get her she will yell for someone to come and get her.  I'm positive she thinks that she has to stay there until someone comes to get her more than her wanting someone to come get her.  Can't say how glad I am that she stays put.  However, and I can't believe I'm writing this, I need/want her to get out of bed on her own in the morning.  Often I am feeding DD2 or putting DD2 to sleep when she wants to get out of bed.  Also, DD1 wants nothing but cuddles for about 5 minutes when she gets up in the morning and gets rather put out if I'm busy with DD2 when I go get her.  So I'm thinking it would help if she just got herself up in the morning.  Is this a rational thought?  I am sleep deprived at the moment with night feedings and so maybe I'm thinking I want something that could back fire on me?  And if I did attempt to do this what's the best way to do it?

I had EXACTLY the same situation when DD was a about 3.5.  She started waking a bit earlier than ds1 at the time and would shout for me to come and get her but in the process would wake ds1 up.  So I told her if she needs to get out of bed in the morning to go to the toilet or come into my room then that's ok.  The next night at about 2 am I woke up to find her standing next to me and when I asked her what she wanted she said, "I just want a cuddle"!  So we did have a bit of waking in the night but nothing massively.  She did come in quite early for a while saying she needed the toilet but I got her to start going by herself and going back into her room after with the help of a light on the timer so she knew when she could come into our room.

So, you might get a few little bumps but hopefully with some 'rules' i shouldn't cause you too many issues.

Caleb is the same age, he stays in his bed unless he wants a cuddle or its time to get up, it is SO much easier!!

we used the lamp on a timer. I told him when the lamp turned on in the morning then he could get up. this was when we were trying to get rid of early wakings last year. somehow that helped him click and when the lamp would come on he would just get up himself. could you try doing something like that? she might need a signal of some sort to show her its ok for her to get out of her bed?

These kids are too funny.  Finn is the same - we were so worried about him going to BBB, it was probably the smoothest transition ever lol. Except that he stays in bed and yells for us.  We have the Groclock too but he hasn't worked out that he could get out after Mr. Sun is awake.  We're toying with telling him but he's not a great rule follower so we'll see.  Let us know how it goes!  We don't have to force it because we don't have a second LO.
The tweaking never stops!

We have a groclock and M lies in bed until the sun comes up and shouts for us (he too wont get out of bed until we go through).  The days that DH is not home (he gets up with M usually :) ) I tell him that he can come through to my bed to watch tv with me until O wakens, and he does this.
L x Having a bw break from 1 Feb 2012 - if you want to get in touch please send me a pm.  I may not be here but you are all in my thoughts xxxx (probably be back some time)

Ethan doesn't get out of his bed for reason either.  He shouts for me when he needs the toilet when he wakes up or when his light comes on.  He knows he's allowed to come out then but still calls me instead!

Great idea about the light on a timer.  I will have to try this.  It would be ever so helpful for her to get herself up in the morning, at a good time. :)

We got them from Ikea so DD has the pink flower one and Ethan has the moon and the star.  That way they look pretty in their rooms as well!
