How to get back to one-sided feeds?
« on: December 06, 2011, 04:06:20 am »
Over the last couple of weeks, I've slowly gone from one-sided feeding to offering both sides.  I know that one side one its own doesn't give DD enough to tide her over, but both sides combined do.  I'd like to get back to one-sided feeds (with offering the other side just in case).  How do I make this shift?  Anyone else done this?

I think with all of mine, I found that after the first few weeks, we were stuck on double sided feeds.  However, for various reasons I know there are lots of ladies who only single side nurse.  I would imagine that you could stay single sided though by increasing the supply on that side -- after your LO finishes nursing you could put the baby back on the same breast to stimulate supply - alternately, you could try pumping that side for 5-10 minutes after nursing is finished to try to increase it as well.

what I used to do, rather than completely single side feed was to feed one side, say the right, burp, offer same side again, then offer the left. The next feed start with left and do the same.
I found that until around 3months they would either refuse the second side or take very little, but started increasing after that.

Hi, Sara.  :)
If she seems satisfied following feeding on one side but just doesn't seem to go long enough between feeds, I would feed her after 30 min- 1 hour or so on the same side again for a bit just to increase your supply. I would think this would be enough after a while to make it where your body adjusts and begins producing more at a time. ?? I'm not a LC by any means but I know that the breasts really do respond to everything that happens, so it's seems like that would do the trick.

Thanks, ladies!  A super long bedtime battle has left me with no time to respond tonight...until tomorrow!

Okay...sadly I am just now getting back to this.

I think I am primarily doing one-sided feeds: I feed, feed, feed her on one side for as long as possible, then I put her on the other side if she still seems to want to eat.  She normally pops off when she's done (thank goodness bc DS never did!!).

Thanks again for the replies! :D
