riddle me this... 40min naps and A time?
« on: December 26, 2011, 01:29:18 am »
so i know to shorten an A time after a 40min nap, but what about after all the other 40min naps? do I keep making the A time shorter and shorter?? for example today we have had 4x40min naps and its only 2pm, ive been putting him down earlier and earlier, now we are at 1 hour 15min A time that Im putting him down and hes just struggling so bad. should I bring it back to an hour? shorter?

Hes 5 months old, has reflux thats semi controlled and seems to be teething. his A time after a full sleep is 2 hours

For us, there's always a time where you can't shorten it anymore.  Right now, with my 7.5 month old, we will do nearly 3.5 hours first thing in the morning and after a decent nap.  For short naps, we would have to go closer to 2.5 hours or he throws a huge fit and screams as he's just not ready to sleep yet.  Can you tell the difference between him being UT and OT when you put him down (really hard, I think I just sorted it a few weeks ago myself) -- I find that when he's OT he might scream at first but if I rub his side and talk to him a bit, he calms right down.  When he's UT (even if we are working off of a short nap) he will scream and scream and just get more and more upset.

I think at 5 months the shortest I got was about 1hr-1 hr15 with a longer A to BT ie maybe 1.5 again. I really played the days by ear if I couldnt get naps extended :-*

gosh it was a hellish day today, up at 5.30am, 4x40 min naps all day, took an hour to get him to sleep at bedtime, just like the old reflux days, its all come back again. I knew things were bad when bedtimes got like this. he was just in so much pain, its the only explanation ive got for these naps being so bad! yesterday we had two 2 hour naps and a one hour nap (i had to extend them of course but still a fantastic day no less!)

Im praying tomorrow is better, im also praying the holidays end really soon cos then the hospital staff get back on and we can get an appointment for a pediatrician to see him there. none of this medication is working, nothing I do is working.

It almost seemed like he wanted the full 2 hour A times even after his short naps all day, he looked exhausted but he just kept fighting sleep!

The shortest A we had was 1hr 30 (although generally 1hr 40) after a 40min nap.
I found if DS slept for 5 mins he then thought he'd had a full nap and didn't want to go down for a nap until his full A was up.  Kind of annoying because I knew he was getting really tired but he didn't seem to think so.  I think maybe it's a body clock thing expecting a nap at a certain time regardless of whether they had a good nap or not.
I usually only reduced the A a little (up to 15 mins) even after a 40 min nap, or several 40 min naps.  We were doing 5 x 40min naps a day at that age, with the reflux too, I know it's hard xx

how on earth is it that even after a full A time, we get a 40min nap, then another full A time we get another 40 min nap, then Im trying to extend it and hes just laying there with his eyes open!!!!!!!!!

im so p!ssy about it that i just leave the room

Maybe you need to push the A another just slightly 5 or 10 mins? Or increase the stimulation level just slightly for a short part of the A and see if this makes him tired enough to get through the 40 min transition?
If he's just lying with his eyes open you can leave the room even if he isn't asleep.  Mine got to a stage he wanted me out of the room before he fell to sleep.
