Your opinion if wake to sleep could work in my case?
« on: December 26, 2011, 19:34:40 pm »
My DD2 is now 5 months. Her weight is now between 7.5-8 kg. I have hard time deciding what to do with her NW. Am thinking of wake to sleep method. She wakes up every night between 4:15 and 5:00. She can not be resettled with paci. At other times she would calm down with a paci. I wait for about 20 minutes before feeding (trying to settle her with the paci) and then if she does not settle I try to give her only a half feed. This works most of the time and I can resettle her until 7am. If I wait too long, eg 30 minutes or so, she seems to get very upset and it is hard to resettle her even after the BF.

She is on mixed milk feeds and BF. BF in the morning, afternoon and evening. Bottle at mid morning and DF (around 10:30pm). She takes between 4-6 oz of formula at each of bottle feeds. She naps from 9-10 am, 12-2 pm and has a short catnap around 4 pm of 30 minutes. Bath at 5:45 pm and sleep between 6:30 - 7 pm.

Do you think wake to sleep is worth trying in this case? Like I said, she wakes up any time between 4:15 and 5:00 but not exactly on the very same time every night.
If yes, what do you do if the baby wakes up totally when you do wake to sleep and does not resettle?

Thanks in advance!
Kirsi

W2S works for habitual wakings. Do you think she wakes from habit? At 5mo she could well be hungry. You could try W2S and see maybe around 3.15am. If she wakes fully personally I would feed her if she doesn't settle quickly. 1 NF is not unreasonable at this age. I wouldn't force her to do without it yet.

I am not sure if it is habitual. If I give her 1/2 feed she will take rest ar 7 am but not always so eagerly. I thought by doing W2S I would find out :-)

The worst that can happen is she wakes when you try or she wakes at the usual time. Worth a try for sure. Good luck. And remember it can take up to a week so do keep doing it if you want to reallly see.

Thanks! I did it for two nights, waking her up at 3:15 am (actually first night she woke up herself) and settled her with paci. No fuss. She then slept until 5:45 which is definitely an improvement. Last night I just fell asleep after turning off my alarm clock and DD woke up at 4:15.After about 50min. of trying to get her back to sleep with paci I had to feed her. So I guess I have to really stick to the W2S for a week or so!!!! You warned me ;-)

That is a good start. Yes i remember it being hard to keep going. Funny enough i am just starting to use it here to get past a 5am waking. It can take a while. At least 3days to change the habit. Good luck.
