11-Month skipping nap to play in crib
« on: January 15, 2012, 21:20:50 pm »
Hello everyone!

Two weeks ago, my husband and I started to sleep train our 11-month-old using Tracy Hogg's P.U./P.D method (at his age, it's mostly a P.D.) and we are using P.U./P.D. for naps, too. The morning nap happens fine, but my baby often skips the second nap (which has been at 2pm for over 2 months now). After crying a bit when I first put him down, he seems like he wants to play and sometimes starts laughing when I try to put him down... I'm very confused. His morning nap is never more than 1h 15min and is done by 11:30, so I don't feel like he should be up for over 8 hours before going to bed at night. Still, I feel that insisting that he sleeps when he's obviously not interested in it, is just plain useless.

I read in your FAQ that, at this age, babies might go from 2 naps to 1, but prior to sleep training, my baby was taking 2 naps no problem. I must admit I sometimes drive him around so that he can take at least a 30 min afternoon nap...

Any advice? Thank you so much!

You have hit the 2-1 ;)

The most important thing to know is that few kids can actually just move to one nap overnight... it's a process and it can take weeks or even months...

There are two ways to tackle this one - short AM/long PM or long AM/short PM.  The most common is the first one as it prevents baby refusing that afternoon nap in most cases and does not encourage early waking like the long AM method can :)

Don't be totally terrified - some kids make the move very easily ;)  We did it at 11 months 1 week with only a couple weeks that were tough :)

Must jump in to agree with Kara and give you some hope for the 2-1.  We just did it recently.  The worst part is fearing it.  The actual naps really aren't that bad at all.
Like you mamma76 my DS was ready for 2-1 at the same time as something else (for him it was a hospital stay and several weeks recovery) so you do wonder is it the 2-1 or is it the hospital stay/sleep training that's done this.

As we've only just done it I can't say I'm all that experienced, but I will repeat, don't fear it, don't be scared to push out the A times either.  I think many of us live in fear of OT but deal with a lot of UT.
The worst part for me was a couple of crib parties in the middle of the night (when I let him have two naps) and morning wake ups earlier than I'd like...but you know what, there are far worse things in life than getting up early :)
