Help with 5wo short naps?
« on: January 21, 2012, 10:42:22 am »
My little one was napping great (1-2) hours until she started doing 20 or 40 minute naps out of the blue last week (4 weeks to the day after her due date.  She was born a week late).  She will do 20 min. if she falls asleep in her own bed and 40 if she falls asleep in my arms and I put her down.  She will sleep 2+ hours if we hold her (something I don't want to encourage).

Yesterday I started feeding her after she awoke (2-2.5 hours) and I found she took a whole feeding.  Perhaps we have a growth spurt problem, but the nap problem has lasted almost two weeks, which seems a little long for a growth spurt.  She has been sleeping better at night since increasing nursing.

-Could this be a nursing problem?  I wasn't pushing her as hard for full feedings (I think she may have been snacking a little) and her nights are better but naps still aren't improving.

-Is it more likely that she is OT or UT at this point?  I often try to put her back down shortly after feeding. We've had a lot of problems with her being OT but she often takes a while to settle.  It varies, but she usually has anywhere from 60-100 min. of wake time.  She tends to get drowsy while nursing so I interpret that that she is sleepy and try to put her down immediately after nursing although it usually still takes her at least 20 min. to settle.

-Would wake to sleep be appropriate at this age?

Any help would be REALLY appreciated!  Thanks! :)

You will likely have the best luck if you shorten her awake time... I would keep her limited to 1 hr when she short naps as a starting point.  I suspect that is jolting herself awake??? Is she swaddled?

Thanks!

I tried much shorter A times yesterday (about 1 hr 15 min) but no luck yet. Could thus be the culprit even after the problem appeared out of the blue?

It doesn't seem that she jolts at  the transitions but she does squirm a lot.

Yes, we have been swaddling although after the short naps started we began leaving her arms out.  I think she is beginning to find her fingers.

I would go back to swaddling her completely for now ;)  It will stop her from waking up completely and she won't need her fingers ;)

Any change to A times will take a few days to see any effect ;)  stick with it!
