Engorged and pumping
« on: March 01, 2012, 12:52:55 pm »
Hi! I am pumping for my 12 week old DS.  I do 5-6 pumping sessions per day for about 25 oz.  For the past 2 days I have missed a pumping session in the PM. The first day it didn't cause any problems other than my boobs were a bit tender.  Last night when I pumped I didn't get much from the right side (which usually produces more than the left) and it was still a little hard but I left it like that.  Now this morning it's the same, I can't pump much from the right side, it's really hard. But I don't have red spots or anything, but how do I resolve this?

TIA
Elise

Hi there, are you just pumping and not feeding directly from the breast? (bravo for pumping that much btw, you're v dedicated)
If you're not experiencing any pain I would just keep attempting to pump a little, or maybe hand express a little bit to relieve the hardness. You don't want it to become too engorged and get infected. Maybe cabbage leaves in your bra too?

hey you with the pretty face, welcome to the human race

Yes I am pumping only... we had lots of BF problems so I had to stop.  :(

The Domperidone really help with the supply though. I am also renting a hospital grade pump.

I'll continue to attempt to pump every hour today, hopefully that should resolve the issue.  Thanks for your advice!

agree with doing some hand expressing or at least massaging your breast a little before pumping

I had clogged milk ducts a little while back and it was sooooooo painful.  I finally got it to unclog by place a heating pad over my breast right before BF'ing.....so maybe try doing that right before you pump.  It will loosen things up and then hopefully the pump will suck it right out of there!

Good luck.

Massage the plugs while you pump (if you can).  That is what works the best for me.
