6 week old..gas or something else??
« on: February 27, 2012, 15:29:49 pm »
Hi,

Here is my situation: baby is breastfed all day until the 10:30pm feeding where she is given a bottle of formula. After that feeding she is put down and goes right to sleep. She wakes around 2/3am and I nurse her. This is where the problem comes. She won't go back to sleep due to gas and fussiness.  I burp her and give her gas drops and nothing helps. Last night we were up from 2:30-5:00. She cries out, but mostly grunts, twists, and scrunches up her face and legs. I have her next to me in a bassinet so I am awake the entire time this is going on. I am wondering if maybe the formula at 10:30pm could be related to this. She is never gassy or fussy during the day when I breastfeed so I am not sure why it occurs so badly at 2:30am!
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. :)

HI there and welcome xx

Formula is not as easy to digest as BM and can cause some LOs issues so if she is fine during the day and only during that period at night my guess would be it could be related to the formula.  Would it be possible to cut out the FF for a few nights to see if things improve?

I'll pop this over to BFing for you as I think it is a feeding issue more than a NW issue x

Agree with Shiv.  Another possibility is the speed of flow from the bottle teat meaning she's taking in more air with her milk.  Do you try to burp her before putting her back to bed?

Are you engorged by that night feed? If so, the flow may just be a little faster or the volume a little higher than what she's used to and have her gulping a bit. You may just need to lean back a bit when you feed her for that 2am feed - that should slow the milk down just enough that she can feed comfortably...

Just a possibility to consider.

That is a good suggestion because I am engorged and she almost chokes on the milk at first! Going to try putting her to sleep in the bouncy chair tonight, maybe that will help her settle.
