Both my DD's were weaned from bottles by 14 months, but neither of them held their own- ever. DD1 showed no interest. DD2 did occasionally try to do it herself (but could not tip it up high enough to get anything out).
Personally, I was happy to with that arrangement, as I wanted to be the one to control the bottle and get it taken care of as quickly as possible. I think it helped with the transition off the bottle and made them less inclined to equate the bottle with a comfort item or toy they did not want to relinquish control over.
