Pacifier to extend naps - reflux...
« on: March 08, 2012, 01:10:51 am »
My DS is 14 weeks old and I have worked so hard on having good sleep habits but his reflux has gotten much worse in the past 2 weeks and seems to be getting worse by the day. We have just started losec for it but it will take a little time to show if working or not. In the meantime coughing and gagging on food is waking him and he cannot get past the 45 mins. I have heard in many places a pacifier can help with reflux but I am terrified it will ruin his good habits of self soothing t night and getting to sleep on own. Was thinking of just giving it to him to settle in middle of nap if he wakes... do you think this will have a negativie effect on everything else?

I guess with a paci you have to weigh up the pros and cons. There is a chance that using the paci to extend naps could result in it becoming a prop BUT at the same time the paci has many benefits for a refluxer, one being the obvious that it helps keep the milk in the tummy and the digestive system moving.

FWIW my refluxer has a paci, at 4 months it became a prop, this meant we had to 'replug' for 2 months when he woke ~2ce i nthe night. Since then he can replug himself and it is now a comfort item not a prop. We made the decision to keep it because it was the lesser of the two evils, without it, there was little sleep, a lot of crying and during teething and GS reflux flares.

Because your LO has just started Losec I would be tempted to say to give it 2 weeks to take effect, Losec was a miracle for us and made a huge difference to Zs reflux. If you can get the reflux fully controlled on the losec then you may not need to worry about using the paci to extend, your LO may start to do it on his own once the discomfort has eased.

Sorry I realised I have written a novel and may be little help, but it is a tough one because each LO is so different KWIM? (HUGS)

No thats brilliant thank you so much. I totally hear you re waiting for losec to take effect and think I will try and hold out for that. Its a bit scary as he has gone from happy chucker to this in two weeks and leaves you feeling quie anxious about how much worse he'll get. The dummy only seemed to work for a little then he was upset again. Just need to find a way of trying to settle him through to the next sleep cycle without him getting so upset as that aggravates the reflux. Poor thing coughed for what seemed the entire night...

You could go the other way and use the paci for two weeks then gradually wean it (if you need to wean - at may not be prop by then ) (hugs) reflux is so hard BTDT! just go with it best you can, lots of AP ;) :-*
