need help figuring out A time for 5 month old
« on: March 17, 2012, 00:17:46 am »
DD will be 5 months tomorrow.  Her day looked like this today:
wake 6:10 (had short night waking at 4:30ish? has had them for several nights now.  she puts herself back to sleep but nonetheless.....)
S 8:10 - 8:45
S 10:45 - 11:15
1:15 - 1:50
4:05 - 4:50
will be in bed around 7 or 7:30

My question is that up until today 2hrs A time after a short nap would get us a very lovely long nap, it even happened yesterday, and the day before (I keep a very detailed sleep log).  And up until  about 5 days ago 2hrs A time first thing in the morning would get a nice long nap.  I haven't had so many short naps in one day for awhile!!!!  You tend to forget what it's like.  and of course it would happen on what I see as the worst day it could happen on. :-\
So is DD OT or UT?  30 min naps have always meant OT in the past.  And UT naps have always been 45-60 min in the past.  Is it possible that DD has decided (not consciously of course  :) ) that she's going to switch it up on me?
I suppose I'm needing to straighten out my thoughts so I can tackle tomorrow.
thanks

I think she is UT at the start of her day and then becomes OT from all of the short naps...

At her age, her A time should be around the 2-2.25 hr mark with a good restful nap of at least 90 mins... so after a short nap, 2 hrs of A time is too much hun.

I would push her first A time though (her nap is totally UT)... put her down around 2 hrs 15 mins and see if her nap gets a bit longer over the next few days.  If she short naps, I would cut her next A time down to 1 hr 45 mins.

Let me know what happens :)

Hmm, I have tried 1hr 45min and it gets me a 45 min or sometimes a 1hr nap.  I always assumed this was UT.  I was thinking perhaps she needed more A time altogether?????In the last week and half (except for yesterday) I am seeing that 2hrs after a short nap had been giving us a longer nap.  Perhaps she just needs more A time in general?  I do think she is UT for her first nap though and that this is producing OT for the rest of the day.  thanks for pointing this out.  I suppose the first place to start is pushing out the first A time.

hmmm, has she always had higher than average A times?  Maybe she is like my DD - she was at 3 hrs by 5.5 months ;)

Not sure.  At 4 months old she was at 1hr 45min for first A time but this lasted about a week and we bumped up to 2hrs A time.  This has been working great except yesterday we had a 1hr 20min nap and the day before we had a 30min nap????  I am seeing a lot of inconsistencies using a 2hr A time for the first A time of the day.  Today she had a short first nap because we were out and about and then after 2.5hrs A time I got a 1.5 hr nap from her.  I was just so sure of A time a week ago and so unsure now!!!

Given that she was at 2 hrs at 4 months 1 week, I would bump her up for sure... maybe try 2 hrs 15 for a few days?
