Just starting, question about nap length
« on: March 17, 2012, 19:09:06 pm »
I just started trying to implement EASY with my almost 8 week old.  He usually eats every 1.5-2 hours (BF) which I am working on extending.  Question-- his naps so far today have been 25 min and 45 min.  The second one he woke up and is really cranky and it's not time to eat again (only been 1.5 hours)  and he doesn't seem hungry,  but he is very resistant to going back to sleep.  Should I spend another 20+ min shhhing him back to sleep or just let him be up?  He's crying and unhappy though not really sure why other than maybe still sleepy?  This is hard....

Thanks

Hi Brini- It is hard!! But focusing on his routine is a nice plan to start to get some more control!!

How about you put up your EASY for us to have a look at to see if it needs tweaking anywhere!

As a general rule i would suggest trying to extend for say 15/20 minutes and then if he's not asleep (or looking close) then call it quits and get him up. It's not worth your stress or his tears! Then shorted the next a time so he's not too tired. If he wakes up at say 45 minutes, and is happy- i would just get him up as this means that he has not had enough A time before the nap and so has had enough sleep.

so we are just starting and it seems like the past few days we have had to go somewhere every afternoon which doesn't help. he goes down and sleeps fine in his bassinet at night, wakes every two hours to eat and goes right back to sleep. occasionally he wakes after an hour with gas and i burp him and he goes back to sleep. this morning we got up, he ate (typically eats for 10-20 min. i have fast let down so it doesn't take long). Then we had activity time for about an hour and fifteen minutes. the problem is by the time he goes down for a nap it has been an hour and a half or so and he is going to want to eat again. he slept for 45 minutes, ate and then fell asleep on me again.  How do I extend time between feeding?  He seems genuinely hungry at two hours. we have had trouble with gas so sometimes it is hard to tell when he is really done eating because when his tummy hurts he wants to eat more for comfort which makes it worse. Anyone have thoughts in this? At 8 weeks and 13 pounds he should be able to go longer at night (he slept 4 hours one time after getting way overtired one day) but I don't know how to get there....
