Night waking that lasts for hours
« on: March 23, 2012, 02:34:37 am »
My son turns 1 year next week. However, for the past few months we've had a NW problem that keeps getting worse. He usually sleeps from about 7-12:30-1:30am, but then is up for the next 2 hours. I was BF at that time, but learned that it didn't help, so I stopped. Sometimes he babbles, sometimes whines, and sometimes screams during that time. I usually go in to comfort him, then leave when he seems to be calm. But, like I said, this goes on for 2+ hours. It has gotten worse and worse and last night he was up for nearly 4 hours before going back to sleep. We've tried earlier bedtime, later bedtime, limiting naps, shorter awake times, longer awake times. Everything seems to work for 3-4 days, but then goes back to the long NW.

His normal schedule is:
6-7am wake up
9/9:30 - 1-1.5 hr nap
1:30/2 - 1-1.5 hr nap
7-ish - bedtime

Has anyone has something similar or any suggestions? I'm completely exhausted and something needs to change!

Hi there, it sounds to me like this could well be related to the start of the 2:1 transition, where your DS is starting to get ready to move to one nap a day. It can be a long transition though and starts with the need for nap capping so that LO isn't having too much day sleep that robs from their night sleep. It also usually means that LO needs a longer A time and your DS is on a pretty low A time for his age really.

have you seen these links... http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=163278.0 and http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=64158.msg476652#msg476652

I wonder if the fact that you are getting long NW are related to the fact that your DS is UT due to his short A times and needs a bit more awake time in the day. In our house long NW were always teething or UT. What do you think?

we are getting it too and DD is 10 months but in our case it cannot be UT, I do think it is teeth.

Thanks for your responses. I'm glad to know that other people have gone through this! We were just at the pedi this morning and he doesn't have any teeth coming in or an ear infection. We're going to play around with some of his A times to see if that helps. I have my fingers crossed!
