1yo sleep gone wonky - lots of issues! Short nap, NW etc etc
« on: April 26, 2012, 13:14:39 pm »
Hello!  I have been reading this board since day one but never registered!  Well here I am and I have a major issue!

My son has just turned one and has always been a pretty good sleeper with only a bit of sleep training needed at points of routine change or after illness/teething.  He can sleep by himself, doesn't have any props, paci etc and I don't go running into him if he's just having a bit of a moan.

He's recently gone to 1 nap which we've been trying to iron out issues with but it seems like everything is really messed up and nothing I try is working!

He was having one nap at 11am-ish but has increasingly been waking up after 45mins - 1 hr completely hysterical (still lying down, eyes closed, inconsolable) and sometimes unable to get back to sleep.  He also never seemed particularly tired for that nap so i've tried an early lunch and extended A time today but he woke up hysterical after 30 mins and I had to shhhh/pat or WI/WO back to sleep.  He's now been asleep nearly 2 hours total if you don't include the 10mins of crying and sshh/pat.  Problem is though, he is in childcare 3 days a week and they don't even attempt to get him back to sleep, so I feel like I spend 4 days a week dealing with him waking up crying only for it to be ruined when he's in childcare.  Also, the childminders are complaining that he can't even stay awake to 11am, that he's exhausted. Sometimes I pick him up after work and they've put him to bed at 10am?!  After barely 4 hours A time.  Well today I got him to 5.5hr awake time with no problems.

Then for the past month we have night wakings EVERY night.  Most of the time around 4/5am. I'm not counting these as EW as he is crying and unhappy, whereas when he wakes up he chats and sings to himself and his happy.  When he has a NW he goes back to sleep after major WI/WO or Shhh/pat, but this has been for weeks now.  I've tried early BT, later BT with going back to 2 naps, i've tried giving meds before bed incase it's teething, dietary changes incase it's his reflux/dairy intolerance playing up... I feel completely exhausted as when he's waking up I am most often not able to get back to sleep as i'm anticipating him waking up again.

Please help!  There seems to be so much going on here that I have no idea what to do.

hi there,
welcome to the boards :)
Could you post his routine with wake up/nap and bedtime timings (as well as meals) for me so I can take a look. My first guess would be he is either a bit OT as 12 months is still on the young side for going to one nap or that the teeth are causing the issues.
I will wait to see the routine and then we can try to help.
x

Hello!

Previously he was having 2 naps but his last nap was going later and later and I would always have to wake him up and he was so grumpy and then refused to sleep till gone 8pm but still wake at 6am.  This pointed to 1 nap to me.  So for the last 2/3 weeks it has been:

W: 6am
Breakfast and Bottle: 7am (he needs 45mins at least for his medication)
Snack: 10am
Sleep: 11am - for sometimes an hour, sometimes an hour and a half
Lunch: 12:30
Snack: 2pm
Dinner: 4pm
Bottle: 5:30pm - bed by 6 to prevent OT.

This is when he will be waking a couple of times at night, normally 3am and 4:30am before waking fully at 6am again

So yesterday I did
W:6:30am
Breakfast & snack all normal but he didn't seem tired normal nap time so..
Lunch: 11:45am
Nap: 12pm - Woke 30 mins later hysterical, got back to sleep.  Ended up sleeping till 2:30pm
Dinner: 4pm
Bottle: 6pm
Bed by 7pm and slept through till 6am with no WU apart from a brief moment at 10pm when my husband and I went to bed and I think woke him up moving around upstairs

But then today he's been all over place:
W: 6am
Bottle & Breakfast - 7am
Nap: 8:45am (??!?!? he was exhausted, yawning, rubbing eyes) for an hour and a half
Snack: 10:30am
Lunch: 12:30pm
Nap: 2pm - 2:45pm (in the car whilst on our way to shops)
Dinner: 4pm
Bottle: 6:30pm, bed for 7pm screamed his head off for about an hour - ended up having to give calpol to calm him down as I have no idea what it was and shhh/pat and WI/WO wasn't working.

Hope that all makes sense.

when he was on 2 naps was one of them v short? When my DS was this age he could not manage one nap but he would refuse his pm nap so we did a 20 min am nap which was AP'd and then a longer pm. When he got to about 17/18 months he was able to handle the switch to one nap.

No he wouldn't naturally have a short nap.  He'd do an hour/hour half first nap and same in PM.  I'd always have to wake him up and he is just awful when I wake him up.  Or i'd leave him and he'd end up going to bed at gone 8pm which is just too late for us.
