Thinking of dropping a night feed
« on: March 06, 2012, 04:27:12 am »
My DD is 8 months old and still has two night feeds.  I think it's about time to get her down to one. Reading others' posts I'm realizing she eats really fast during the day and takes so much longer at night.  I don't know if this is just because she is sleepy at night, or if she is getting in the habit of taking in a large amount of her calories at night.  :o If this is the case, how do I up her calories during the day to prepare for weaning a night feed?  She is breastfed, so I can't just add an ounce or something...

Sure!  Actually, if it's okay I'm going to link you to another post I recently wrote (for the EASY forum) that contains our EASY.  It also mentions some problems we are having with it that tie in with this post.  Thank you so much! :)

SO it looks like your E in your EASY is pretty good for an 8 month old. I think we were doing something similar and Z could go longer in the morning then later on with naps etc I did two feeds closer together before BT.

I do think you can def drop to the 1 NF. I would actually drop that solid meal at 5.30 and move it closer to 4pm if you can. We were doing the same thing and getting NW etc and found once we removed this so close to bed Z slept better. Solids close to BT can mess with their sensitive digestive systems and upset their tummies at night. Even if you just give it a go :-\

If you are going to drop to 1 NF you need to choose which one and what time you will feed/wont feed before. WHat are your thoughts on this?

The problem with moving the solid meal to 4pm is that she is still napping then.  We could do it a little earlier (like 5pm), closer to her last BF, but I don't know if she would have room in her tummy for it.  Hmm... Awhile back I thought she might be having trouble sleeping because of her digestive system working so hard but she is doing so much better now that I shortened her last A time.  In fact, the last two nights she's only woken twice (for each feed) and that is it! *crosses fingers* I'll keep that it mind though, especially since she does tend to have digestive issues! :(

Do you think I shouldn't worry, then, about the last two BFs being so close together causing her to not take a full feed before bed?  I just feel bad expecting her to go longer at night without eating when she may not be filling up before bed...

I'd like to cut out the second feed, since I tend to stay up a few hours after she goes to bed and cutting out the second feed would give me the longest stretch of sleep. :)  Before I started worrying about her not taking a full feed before bed, our rule was I would feed if it had been at least 4 hours (or close to it) since the bedtime feed when she woke.  Recently though I started feeding her sooner if it had been a few hours or so and the paci wouldn't calm her because I figured she probably didn't get that full feed before bed. That's why I want to fix that problem.  Any thoughts? Thank you so much! :)

If you don't feel it's solid related that's great :) maybe just make sure dinner is a small and gentle meal if your not sure.

I do think your ok with those pm feeds, EASY does get a bit messy around this age. If you can get the last feed closer to 7 it may help, but with solids and good feeds she hold be fine overnight ;) I would def stick to 4 hrs min o/n. at this age I wouldn't feed before 4am, but that was because I knew Z didn't need it KWIM?

Update!  We've been down to one night feed for a couple of weeks now!  Still lots of nws, but at least I only have to feed her once.  I'm amazed she is going so long without eating!  I'm considering trying moving the last solids farther from BT in case she is having digestive issues.  How far from BT do you think they would need to be to not cause a problem?

Great progress! I would offer solids before 5pm at this age or even earlier if you suspect they are causing tummy trouble.

Okay, thanks! :)  Since she often doesn't wake from her last nap until around 5pm and that is when she nurses would I do them in combination with the nursing? Do you think she would be hungry for both at the same time?  Here is our EASY (well, kind of... we're trying to figure some stuff out with it now, but this gives the basic idea):

7:00 Awake
7:45 Nurse
8:45 Solids
10:30-12:00 Sleep
12:15 Nurse
1:15 Solids
3:30-5:00 Sleep
5:00 Nurse
6:00 Solids
7:00 Nurse (BT routine)
7:30 BT
Around 11:00/11:30 Night Feed

Her last Solids is already a smaller meal than the others because I want to make sure she is hungry for her BT routine BF. I don't know if it is causing problems or not, but she does seem to have a lot of digestive issues, so I wonder sometimes and it's probably worth a try...

Maybe try for 5.30 ish and a smaller meal than the others, also keep it bland ie root vegetables. Your easy looks great!
