Should I have fed LO during a NW?
« on: April 11, 2012, 12:43:39 pm »
Before EASY, my 4 mth old used to wake up from 2 to 2.5 hrs between feeds. More so the 2.5 hr mark. I am trying to extend the feeds by 3 hrs since starting EASY...on it for about two weeks but kind of fell off the training a bit...trying to get back on again. He is swaddle With the MB which is my lifeline for sleep right now but is growing out of it. He is not Rolling yet and does not take a pacifier.

His sched last night...And part of this morn

7 feed, bedtime
10 feed...should have been a DF but he woke up before my alarm was to go off.
12 to 1 whiny cries that lasted about 3 mins. Did not go in. He settled himself.
2 woke, fed
3.30 woke, fed. Fell asleep at the breast so I took him off as his eating was slowing.
6 woke, stirred and quieted down. Did not go in.
6.30  fed
8 nap

I have to admit I am trying to go to bed by 930pm at the latest and I have been missing the DF for the last few days as he is waking me up.  Before EASY, he did have a normal feed time around the DF so I do. It think this is a bonus feed for him. I will continue to DF him ...hopefully I wake before he does.

He did go for a feed stretch of 4 hrs after his 10 pm feed. He woke at 3.30.  I did go in to SH/pat him in hos crib but his cries were escalating.  I admit I only tried for what seems like a minute.  He normally would have woken up around 1-1.30 for a feed before EASY but even on EASY depending on his bedtime he may still have a feed around that time but hopefully with a three hr gap from his previous feed.

my goal for now is to have him feed every three hrs or more during the nights.  The four hr stretch was an accomplishment.

My questions..

1) should I have fed him at 3.30 as i did just feed him at 2 so that was only a 1.5 hr stretch. Or should I SH/patted him longer? His cries did not sound overly distressing but they were beginning to sound distressing. When I picked him up after the SH/pat he started to suck on my arm.

2) on an aside...during the day are we to tank them up? If so, does this not create an expectation by babies to be tanked up at night as well resulting in more NW to feed?  Right now I do try to have him feed every three hrs during the day.

Thx.

I think you sound like your on the right track Hun,it's hard when they are up at night and your tired :-*

I think you do what to make sure NF are at least as far apart as day feeds, otherwise your LO can start to tank up at night, not day and end up Expecting feeds e Rey time they wake, leading to prop issues later on.

With yor 3.30 feed for example I would try not to feed. Does your LO have a paci,do you feel he is sucking because he needs the breast to get back to sleep. It's at this age their sleep cycles change and they stir more frequently at night. def try shh/pat,or if that do spent work, anything to start with ie rocking to get him back to sleep ;)

Some your LO have a lovey? I could be a good time to introduce one ;)

So tanking up....it doesn't mean snacking all day, it means feeding them when they are hungry during the day so they have full feeds. It also is refered too sometimes as cluster feeding in the evening, so you may feed 7am, 11, 2, 5, 6.15, 7.30 with the last 3 being cluster feeds before BT. I'm not sure on the timing of CF so maybe try Bf board for more info? If your LOfeeds well during the day then they shouldn't need as much at night.

Hope that makes some sense! X
