30 min nap - 18mo help!
« on: April 21, 2012, 22:03:04 pm »
My DD was bad napper since birth, there were periods when she was having good naps, but for months she is waking up at 30 min mark and cries... I've tried to tweak her routine, tried to extend her naps, her room is very dark, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

She is 18 mo now and has just 1 nap. I have to rock her to sleep for her nap. Her BT is at 8pm, and she put herself to sleep in seconds. She sleeps through the night, wakes au usually somewhere between 7.30-8.30. Her nap time is at 2pm. In case I'll try to put her earlier, she just won't asleep. The only way to extend her nap time is to take her from the crib when she wakes at 30min mark and lay down with her (actually she has to be on top of me), this way sometimes she will fall asleep again and can nap for 1,5-2 hours in total. Nap time does't affect her night sleep, she always goes to sleep at the same time easily and sleeps more or less the same amount of time.
Maybe someone has any ideas?

I kinda got used to her short naps, but sometimes I dream how great it would be to have at least one hour for myself during the day...

Looks like a couple of issues at first glance...

1. She is OT for her nap at 2pm... if she is up at 730am, that is a total A time of 6.5 hrs.  A little high for sure.  My DD is almost the same age and goes down well after 6 hrs 15 mins... 6.5 hrs really can be tough to settle her.

2. Prop - she is being rocked to sleep for her nap.  Not an issue if she would resettle during the nap on her own but since she isn't, it becomes a prop.

As the mother of a 17.5 month old who is rocked to sleep for her nap every day (but mine sleeps 2-2.5 hrs), I think you might be best to try reducing her first A time and see if that is enough to get her to settle to sleep on her own...

What do you think?

thanks for ideas! I've tried to reduce her A time several times, but she just won't go to sleep, even if I rock her for 30 min :) She has always had longer A time than average for her age, otherwise won't fall asleep... So sometimes I think that maybe I have to increase her A time, I know sounds crazy, but I think that maybe this could work. She puts herself to sleep for BT easily and resettles by herself during the night if she wakes, so it is weird that she can't do the same with her nap...

Same thing here.. really struggles at naptime but easily goes down on her own at night and during the night too... I have yet to figure it out... there was a few months that naps were totally independent here as well, then SA started!
