ARGH! Anyone else have this happen?
« on: April 24, 2012, 08:19:43 am »
Logan is 12 months, 1 week. When he's done two short naps at day care, has long happy wakings often between 3-4am. It seems really odd that two 45min naps is enough for him in a 13hr day but he's having UT wakings. He's heaps better with the longer A times entailed in a 11.5-12hr day with one 2-2.5hr nap, sleeps a good 12-13hr overnight after that without a peep or if there's a peep, its a quick NF after 11-12hr and back down again. Sometimes I even get 14hr!!

So, is it the shorter A times? Is it OT masquerading as UT?

I have tried one nap at day care when I'd do one nap at home but its too much - he doesn't sleep beyond 1hr15 there (hasn't in 3.5 months despite me being assured he'll settle in and sleep normally there) and that's not enough sleep for a 13hr day which is as short as we can make it with the commuting.

When you say 2 short naps at daycare-are they just allowing him to sleep 2 x 45 mins? Have they tried a shorter AM like 20 mins, and tried for a longer PM? DD1 never slept more than 30 mins at daycare ::)

Ps Can't remember if I already told you this but DH and I LOVED Airlie Beach when we were in Oz, I wanna come back!! x
Blessed mum to two home-birthed darling water babies

hey you with the pretty face, welcome to the human race

They think it's fantastic when he sleeps more than 45min but its rare and always has been, even when he wasn't in 2-1. And the day we tried one nap, they said to me on my way out 'at least he'll sleep well tonight' as consolation that I had to deal with a screaming OT baby on a 30min boat ride :o They don't really get how much day sleep affects my boy :( He took a full week to recover from that one day of too little sleep.

They have taken 2.5 months to follow basic instructions like 'put him down for a nap at 10:30'. They think if he's tired, he'll sleep.

His typical day care day looks like this at the moment:
6 - awake
10:30-11:15 - nap
2:45-3:30 - nap
7 - in bed asleep
I've done this because we have to pick him up at 4:50 and so a late CN is not possible if he naps for 1hr15 at say 11:00-12:15. They all go outside with the bigger kids at 4pm and he knows the routine. He'd chuck a major fit if he had to go back inside to sleep!

The day we tried one nap looked like this:
7 - awake
12:00-1:15 - nap (they apparently tried to resettle but when he started crying loudly, they got him up because they didn't want to disturb the other kids)
6:30 - asleep in bed (he had a bath for 2 mins, BF for 5-6 mins and was an absolute wreck), woke at 7, 7:45, 8:15, 2 and 5.

Glad you liked Airlie :) I like it too :P

Hiya, for my DS the number of naps mattered a lot. Once he was ready for one nap, we had to stick to it. Any 2 nap days gave us UT NW. He needed the long A times associated with one nap. It meant he napped well and then slept well at night. At your DS's age, the only way for him to sleep well at night was to have 1 long 2hr nap in the middle of the day. Nothing else worked for him.

With DD, it didn't matter so much. Her nights are much more dependent on the amount of day sleep, and when she was younger this could have been one longer nap or two shorter ones. Actually, she's very low sleep needs so two shorter naps often worked better as she'd have less sleep but not get OT from long A times. The complete opposite of DS.

They're all very different!

They are very different. This one is sleeping the worst he ever has. even as a newborn!! Its driving me nuts.

Last night he was waking up screaming inconsolably. We'd go in and PU and he'd scratch, push away, pinch, hit screaming all the while. He took ages to calm down. Last time he did this a feed settled him immediately but he's not hungry so I'm not sure its a good idea to get the boob out every time he's waking like that (as its several times a night). He's absolutely wrecked today  from such a bad night :(
