5 month old NW earlier than before
« on: May 18, 2012, 05:52:35 am »
Hallo,
I need some help desperately.
My LO used to be a good night sleeper since he was born. Naps were always difficult but nights were almost perfect.
When he was about 3 months, he slept from 7PM to 3-4AM without waking up, then got his bottle and slept until 7.
Then the nights started to get worse and worse. He began to wake up earlier, due to hunger, so I increased the evening feed, than added cereal at the age of 4 months, it seemed to help a bit, he slept through a few nights but after the 5th month it's getting worse again. He started to take solids at 4,5 months, feeds well during the day but it doesn't seem to help the nights.
He's gaining a lot of weight so I don't want to overfeed him at night.
But last two nights he woke up around midnight and would cry (literally scream) until he got his milk. I tried all sorts of stuff to make him go back to sleep, but it was only fighting for about two hours, then I gave up and fed him. Of course, he would wake up hungry again around 4AM.
He falls asleep independently in his cot. Most of the time I don't even have to be there, sometimes I just need to hold his hand to help him fall asleep.
Any ideas what this should mean? Can it be a growth spurt at 5 months?
Thanks for any help!

Yes, it can be a growth spurt, babies don't read the books and put on growth spurts when they're "due"... If it lasts more than a week, then its probably something else but growth spurts at this age can be massive.

How much solid food is he having? Milk has more calories, so you may need to cut back a bit on solids and ensure his milk intake is nice and high during the day.

Thank you!
I tried to add some more milk even after his vegetable meal and it seems a bit better. He's still waking up around 3-4AM, but at least it's not midnight.

Waking at 3-4am is still a pretty good stretch and it is what he was doing before he started waking at midnight :)
