Good sleep until NF
« on: June 10, 2012, 19:07:25 pm »
Hi all!

My 6 wk old has managed to master his sleep until his night feed and just wondering if any food had any suggestions.

He goes down at 7pm, DF at 10.30pm and cries for his NF between 2.30 and 3.30am. He takes a full bottle most of the time and he goes off to sleep fine but he generally wakes every 45 mins or less. I have to use the dummy and sometimes get him back off to sleep in my arms or bed with me (at mo sleeps in Moses basket by my bed). We do this until about 6-7am when I get up to feed him again.

Any suggestions? It's quite light by the time the NF is over-wondering if that has anything to do with it?

Are you burping him well after the NF? Sounds to me like discomfort, possibly from gas. Its also the coolest part of the night - could he be a little cold?

It could be the light... maybe some blackout blinds for his room?

Hi bec, thanks for replying. I am burping him tonnes and the NF generally takes over an hour cos of it!

Last night I put him down at 4.30am after the nf and then he woke 45 mins later, I tried to pacify with the dummy but eventually picked him up and soothed him for 5 min at 6am and he slept through to just gone 7am....this makes me think it's more of a wanting to be comforted to sleep thing than wind? Just seems strange as we put him down at 7pm fine and he soothes himself to sleep?!!? Why is he not doing that at 4am?

Also I put on the banket after the NF and he heating comes on at 3.45am so I don't think he's cold.

That's a long feed - is he waking fully during this time? How long does a feed usually take him? I'm of the get the food in and get back to bed mindset when it comes to NF's, particularly at this age.

I suspect he's more drowsy and more tired when you put him down the for the night at 7pm than at 4am and that may be why he wants a bit of a cuddle to get back to sleep. Its not unreasonable for a 6 week old baby to want a cuddle to get to sleep at any time...

I'm glad you said that as I thought it was too long too. Yeah he's fully awake in the feeds, but I cant see how he cannot be? He cries for food so that wakes him...? Am I oing that wrong?

Does he wake crying? Most LO's wake and then cry, rather than crying in their sleep and the crying waking them iyswim.

If he wakes and its around feed time, I'd be up and feeding him while he's as drowsy as possible so you and he can get back to sleep asap.

Hi bec,

Took your advice and actually dream fed him this morningamuse before 3.30am as he hadn't woken (last DF st prob 10.30). Put back down to bed still asleep at 3.45am then woke up an hour later wide awake! He was making some griffing grunting sounds and I peeked my eyes over the Moses basket and he was fighting against his Woombie and eyes wide open. I coul have done what I have been doing which is popping the dummy in and him spitting it out on repeat until he nods off for another 45 mins or so but this am I've decided to get up with him.

Do you think he's just simply had enough sleep by nearly 5am? Is that possible as he's so young?

I don't think that's him being ready for the day... what sort of grunting - did you burp him at all at the DF?

Yes did burp after DF. It's grunting like huffing. His face isn't a grimace, more of a frown?!?!

Is that still wind? Is that why he'll only give me another 45 min sleep? I thought he was coming out of one sleep cycle and couldnt get himself back off?

It can be wind/discomfort - he's not got reflux has he? Some LO's are ok til the small hours of the morning then have a terrible day and crash again for the night...

At this age, sleep cycles aren't quite that pronounced or that long, typically :-\ That tends to happen around 10-13weeks I think.

Is it more light in the room at that time? A noise somewhere?

I don't think he has reflux as he's fine for the rest of the day. I'm thinking it could be the light as it does get bright at about 4ish.

Thanks for troubleshooting with me bec!

That's ok, sometimes we just need someone to throw ideas at us to think about ;)
