doesnt matter what i do, he will nOT take a 2nd nap
« on: July 02, 2012, 03:37:48 am »
Levi is 11 months old and for the past week he has totally refused his second nap. he went from doing a 1.5 hour nap in the morning and 40min nap in the afternoon to a 45min nap only. Ive increased his A time but it hasnt made any difference. hes waking early (5.30am although its not really early because Ive had to put him to bed at 6pm due to this ridiculous early short nap) and started Nw's. he is teething but Ive given pain relief etc

Ive tried one long nap at a 4 hour A time but it ends at either lunchtime or before lunchtime leaving a loooooong time till bedtime even with an early bedtime. Ive tried a short am nap yesterday, he did a 30min nap and then a 20min nap in the afternoon!

When Im doing wind down hes nearly falling asleep on me so I know hes tired but as soon as I put him into bed he cries and cries and gets worked up. I do wi/wo and get no result. I do patting and he did the 20min sleep!

today hes done this:

awake 5.30am
nap 11-11.45 (daycare)
he is fighting nap now at 3.40pm.... so if i go for another early night im just gonna end up in the same situation again tomorrow

can someone help me please? Im thinking hes only going to do one nap and Im fine with it but Im not fine with the huge amount of A time from wakeup of this nap till bedtime

I'd  bet hes OT and more tired than usual from teething and waking early from both. Have you given meds overnight around when they would wear off? Have you tried shorter A times? On that early wake up, with teething and accumulated OT Id have needed to do a much earlier nap...like 8:30 or 9 in nf order to get a decent nap. Then done another with a similar shorter than usual A time. And maybe still an early BT to
combat the OT/teeth and get some sleep under his belt.

I hope he starts sleeping better soon.

Hugs hun. I agree with Nicole that he's OT - I especially think he's OT for the second nap, but mainly because of the loooong A before the first one. Can nursery put him down earlier? What time does he get home - will he be at nursery for the second or at home? When you first do short am, it's not uncommon to have a couple of days of two short naps so I'd stick with it and see if the second nap lengthens out.

What about aiming for something like this:

WU 5.30
nap: 9.15-10.00 (capped)
nap: 1.30 - 3.00
bed: 7ish (earlier for a day or two if you think he's still tired and needs it to catch up)

This should gradually push the WU later, fingers crossed. If the second nap is short, do EBT as you have been doing, but stick with it for a few days.

What do you think?

I did tell them to put him to sleep at 9.30am but for some reason they didnt do it till 11am. Ive tried the earlier nap and we got a 45min nap so I upped the A time by 20mins and I got a nap that was about 1.5 hours long but that still meant a wakeup at 12 noon.

however now hes sick with a cold as well as teething, so I dont know. hes so happy when hes awake even with these silly little naps. he fought me for 40mins on his second nap today till 4.10pm before I just got him up, fed him dinner, waited a little bit and in bed by 5.15pm

oh he wont be at daycare tomorrow, but he will be for the following 2 days, he never sleeps longer than 40 odd minutes there regardless of time but usually he gives me the second nap at home... not anymore

I think if he gets an earlier nap there he will do a better second nap for you at home.

right, well bedtime was 5.15pm and he woke a couple of times but I only had to go to him once to resettle. he woke at 5.30am, will try for a short morning nap, im a bit scared that he wont take the second one though and will end up mega OT due to having only had one nap thats so little....

He was yawning and yawning at 8.15am and so I put him to bed at 8.30am and he was fast asleep within minutes so that was a 3 hour A time there. I fell asleep and forgot to wake him so he slept a total of 1 hour 10mins before he woke up himself. that was 9.40am... its now 1.10pm and Ive tried putting him down for a nap, hes so not ready, slapping me in the face, laughing and squealing. if he doesnt have an afternoon nap then Im screwed, to have him been awake from 9.40am is just ridiculous! Ive got to get DS1 from preschool at 2pm so this could all just end up a big mess
