EW too much sleep during the day?
« on: August 02, 2012, 09:00:52 am »
Hi all :)

This is the first time I've posted on the sleep boards. It's usually food issues for me!

So my twins (11.5 months) have been waking earlier and earlier in the morning. They have slept 7am-7pm since 6 months old (yay!) but over the course of a few months have gradually got down to waking about 5:30am (boo!). It has been known to be 5am a few times too. One of my twins in particular is so miserable when waking up at this time until he wakes from his first nap. I will post their EASY.

Wake up at 5:30 (I leave them in their cots until 6am as they talk happily)
 6:15 - bottle
7:00 - breakfast
9:00 - 10:30 nap (1.5 hours)
11:30 - dinner
2:00 - 3:30 nap (1.5 hours)
5:00 - tea
7:00 - bottle and bed.

This is our typical EASY. Sometimes they do wake at 6am but I can't see anything in our day that we do differently for them to wake up later. It does work out easier to fit everything in when they wake earlier however I'm not sure if I should be capping naps and working towards the 2-1 transition now? I would much rather they got the sleep they needed at night rather than making up for it during the day.

I think I need a plan :/

TIA

Sounds like 2-1 time!

Most people start off planning for a long AM nap after about 4hr A time, then cap the PM nap depending on the length of the AM nap. That way you get a good nap in the bank or you have another chance in the PM if the AM nap goes to pot ;)

So your day would look something like this:
6 - up for the day
10 - nap
11:30/12 - wake
3:30 - nap
4 - wake
7 - bed

The long A time first up will help discourage that waking getting any earlier and you should be able to shift it later gradually so they're getting up at 7 again if you want to.

Ahh though it would be time. Sounds like its going to be fun! So to start with i have to increase the 'A' time right? Then once I've got to 4 hours let them have a long nap (hopefully) and cap the afternoon nap if they've had a decent nap in the morning?

Thank you for the advice :)

Yes!  I generally push A times by about 15 minutes every three days to avoid OT.
