quick question
« on: August 13, 2012, 16:02:50 pm »
My three month old has by been on a consistent 3 hour EASY and all of his naps yesterday were short (45) regardless of how we tried to resettle. He did pretty well last night and took a long three hour nap this a.m.
We suspect that he either had a lot of gas or needs a chiropractic adjustment because of his poor sleeping.  Should i lengthen his activity time before his next nap? If so, by how much?

Was yesterday a one-off?  Or have you been getting a lot of 45 min naps recently?  Personally I wouldn't make changes on the basis of one off-day, but if it's a pattern then you might need to think about a change in A times.  45 mins are also developmental at this age........

What's your current EASY?

Well, we did find out that his tummy and neck and back were out, so I am assuming that is why his schedule was off and he was super cranky.  We are following a 3 hour EASY and it is very close to clockwork; every hour and a half after waking-he is showing subtle signs of exhaustion.  He goes down pretty easily most of the time.

His nighttime schedule has royally screwed up since starting EASY but I am assuming it is because he is actually napping now.  That is a bummer but having a happy boy during the day vs. constant screaming is a huge improvement.  He goes to bed between 6:45-7:30 most days and then we started doing a dream feed at 10:30; he habitually wakes at 1am or shortly after and we give a paci and then he wakes again at 3:00-ish for a feed.  He has not wanted to go down after 4 am for a few nights but that seems so be resolving itself.  He is usually up for the day at about 6:00-or so, depending.

His sleepy cues are really subtle...is there any reason for that?  I hardly ever see the kiddo yawn.  We are finding out, as well, that he gets over stimulated very quickly.  Because of the colic, I have no idea what personality type he is...no clue.

Thank you so much for your response!

No experience with chiropractic adjustments I'm afraid so can't comment on how that might be affecting things.

You may just be picking up on them early and reading him well :)  For some LOs, by the time they've yawned it's too late and they are already OT.

Is he nearer to 3 months or 4 months?  If he's headed for 4 months and the 45 min naps continue, he might be starting the transition towards a 4 hour EASY.  Check out http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=84884.0 and http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=120362.0 for some information that might help you.

Also, just to bear in mind - babies with colic can take longer to settle into routines, though sounds like you've been doing great :D

Thank you for the great info!  He will be 4 months on the 25th; so almost four, I guess!  Crazy how time flies!

Well, we had our first 'intentional late nap' and he did amazing!  My friend, from over 100 miles away, invited Henry and I to go to our local zoo and guess what?  They were going to be in town just as Henry was to go down for his second nap of the day.  We went and just got back and he fell asleep with about five minutes of rustling and yanking out his paci (his latest and greatest trick is to pull it out and attempt to put it back in) and then he was out!  He will be rustling as his first cycle is ending here in a few minutes so I am curious to see how long he sleeps for this nap.  He did SO incredibly well, although I am not going to make that a habit.  It was a good trial run as I have the next two days at home so we can recoop.  I was so proud of him!  He didn't scream, just got a little fussy for about five minutes.  No biggie.

Is is rustling and acting like he is wide awake...oh boy...might be a long rest of the day, and then again-maybe not!

I have always wondered if we actually were dealing with colic..he definitely has tummy issues and we need the chiro at least once/week.  Wondering if a schedule would have straightened him out and if so-what a sad realization.  Wasted time with a cranky baby...
