Tongue thrust reflex
« on: September 11, 2012, 10:52:42 am »
I'm sorry if this is a silly question, but how do you tell if a baby has lost their tongue thrust reflex, apart from by actually feeding them?  ???

DD is just over 4 months (although was two weeks late), so we are in no hurry to start solids yet, just want to be prepared, but this has been puzzling me. She is showing all the other signs of being ready: sitting up, moving things (i.e. everything!) to her mouth, pincer grip, LOVES watching us eat etc., so I'm pretty sure we'll have to start before she reaches 6 months, but I don't want to jump the gun if she's not ready...

Any thoughts?

Pretty sure it's just a 'try it and see' situation :)  She'll let you know if she's not ready x

Thanks for the reply :)

So it's a case of suck (or chew) it and see.

I will probably try and hold out another few weeks - I didn't plan on introducing solids quite so early, but she really does seem ready.
