w2s for naps
« on: September 11, 2012, 10:44:00 am »
Hi. My lb is 14 months old and is on 1 nap a day at 12pm. He needs to have between 2 and 3 hours sleep for this nap but the problem is he wakes at least twice during this time and needs me to resettle him, usually by nursing. I have decided to try the w2s method. Yesterday I did it after 30 mins and he slept through the first 45 minute mark. However he then woke 45 mins after I had done w2s. My question is should I go in every half hour, most advice I have found says you only need to go in once, or should I resettle by nursing on subsequent wakings to get his 2 hours in? He is currently nursed down for his nap although I am also working on this, along with nw.
Thank you for any advice.
Emma

just to update, today I did do w2s every half hour and he slept for 2 hours. At that point I think I disturbed him too much as he woke but a quick nurse and he slept for another half hour.

Before he was on one nap, did he nap full naps of 1.5h by himself? Or always needed help?
IIWY I would do what you did today, 'cause it worked and see if it's working again for you. You could do this for a couple more days and then stop and see if he learned to go through the cycles himself.

Just to get it straight, if you don't do W2S he is waking up after 45min? When is his WU and BT?

Sometimes he would go straight through for 1.5 to 2 hours and sometimes he would need resettling. The resettling was becoming more common. As a young baby he napped really well but we got into some bad habits, mostly as a result of illness and circumstances, and his sleep has just gone downhill.
If I don't do w2s, he wakes up after 45 mins and I go into him and nurse him back to sleep. He usually then needs resettling at least once more before he is ready to get up. ( we co-sleep and so his naps are on my bed)
Wu is about 7am and bt about 7pm.
Thanks

When he wakes up after 45min is he happy or sleepy and crying, like he didn't want to wake up? Are your nights ok?

He wakes and cries for me. I pick him up and he will go straight for the breast so I have been nursing him back to sleep so that he gets the sleep he needs. If I didn't, he would get up at this point and after initial crying would then play happily until he got tired later on.
Nights are not great. On a good night he is up once before 4am. On a bad night he is up at least hourly. Most nights fall in the middle. I have been nursing him when he wakes and he goes straight back to sleep. However, I am working on weaning from night nursing using dr gordon's method. (as we co-sleep pupd would be difficult). From 4am until Wu he is very restless but this has always been the case.

I think there might be a prop there with the feeding to sleep.

What's that?

I agree that nursing has become a prop and am trying to work on this. Here is a link to the dr Gordon method of night weaning. http://drjaygordon.com/attachment/sleeppattern.html/

Unfortunately today was not so successful. He woke after 1 hour 10 but then cuddled back to sleep for a further hour and a quarter. He would not be put down though.

Thanks again

Emma, did he go through the 45min himself?
Like I said before, I think if you are trying to do W2S then you would need to do it for a few days and then stop with it to see if it holds.

Yesterday I did w2s at 30 mins which took him through the 45 min mark. I then did it again at 60 mins but he woke at 70.
Today I did w2s at 30 mins but he woke at 40. Seems to be going backwards. :(

Mmm... am not sure what's going on. Maybe it was just a day off? Maybe you can try a day and not do it and see what's happening.
