Still waking at 19 months - new baby due in 10 weeks!
« on: September 13, 2012, 07:02:28 am »
Hi :) I do have another long thread but decided to make a new one as Sophie did start either sleeping through or only having 1 wake up around 18 months, this lasted about a month but we are now back to 2-3 or more wake ups!

She was awake every 2.5hrs last night. Awake from 1.20am - 3.40am then up at 7.00am the night before. She's currently on the same routine she was when she was sleeping through which is 5.5hr A before nap, 2hr nap and then 5.5-6hr before bed.

I said in my previous thread that i don't actually mind the 1 wake up and I'm not expecting her to sleep a full 11-12hrs a night without waking but I'm starting to get a little worried now for when the baby comes (She's due in 10 weeks) As for the past week or so Sophie's sleep has been awful.

She seems to start sleeping really good but it only lasts 3-4 weeks. This time I'm not sure why she's started waking loads but the previous 3 times she's started sleeping well she's came down with a cold/cough and it's knocked her sleeping but this time she seems fine. x

Now expecting our 2nd girlie, due 22nd Nov.

Sorry I haven't read your other thread. What happens when she wakes up? How do you get her back to sleep? Dies she go to sleep totally independently from wide awake?

Hi, yeah she goes to sleep on her own without me in the room, she either goes to sleep straight away or plays for 10mins then falls asleep :)

When she wakes in the night i just lay her down or put her back into bed (we took the sides off her cot at 18 months and she transitioned fine :)). Tell her it's still time for night night then leave the room - she then normally goes to sleep again fine but has lately been crying/moaning for us to come back so I've been having to go back in and lay her down 2-3 times.  x

She woke for the day today at 7.15am, i then tried to put her down for her nap at 12.15pm but she just didn't seem tired and played until 1.00pm - I then brought her down and she fell asleep on the sofa at 2.00pm. Going to wake her now at 3.15pm as I'm hoping she'll still have a reasonable bedtime due to the short 1hr 15min nap. Maybe she was UT last night? as she did take a good while to settle at bedtime. x

we had a nightmare at bedtime and she finally fell asleep at 9.20pm! She just kept screaming and crying if i left the room which is unusual.. hoping its just a phase? as she just messes about if i stay in the room like tonight she kept laughing and jumping about until she couldnt keep awake any longer. x

Can anyone help me? lol. Last night was awful & i'm not sure what's going on. :(

She fell asleep at 9.00pm probably OT, woke after 2.5hr, 3hrs then 2hrs and was awake at 5.30am and just wouldn't go back to sleep, again screamed if me or OH tried to leave the room so after about 40mins of us putting her back into bed and trying to leave the room (she's been fine when left to go to sleep until 2 days ago). we finally gave up at 6.45am and got up for the day.

She's currently playing happily and doesn't seem tired at all unlike me and OH lol.

Is it possible she could be going though the 18 month sleep regression but at 19 months? (She turned 19 months 4 days ago). As her sleep was fine at 18 months lol.

Also could the currently screaming at bedtime when we try to leave be separation anxiety that's just started in the past 2 days?

Any help/advice would be great. Thanks :) x

OK a couple of thoughts - one is, she is very young to be in a big girl bed, do you think you should try putting her back in the cot? She may feel more secure in there.

Are you doing WIWO to settle her? It's really important that she goes to sleep without you in the room, WIWO is great for this although it can be difficult if the toddler is in a big bed.

Yes, it could definitely be the 18 month sleep regression!

Hi Jem,

I have read all of your other posts, as our little ones are similar ages and both seem to have been awful sleepers!
We have and are still going through a bad patch with him.  I would say it sounds like the regression, also this age is very tricky as they have so much going on.  We have started having new words everyday.
Is she talking?  At this age we have had, regression, wonder week and teething canines!  All I can say is try and stick with your routine and ride it out.  As pp said WI/WO is very good, we had to do that a couple of times at bt.  Also the crying when you leave the room can be from OT.
I would say her naptime yesterday was probably too early at 12.15 after waking at 7.15.

Today I would try and get her togo past 11.30 before her nap and let her have as much as she needs.  Then assess how she is for bt.
And try and get a nap yourself.

Good luck x
Mummy to a very spirited gorgeous boy!

She's talking loads at the moment so i guess it could be ression and maybe to do with language/learning new words? I don't think it's teeth but i can't be 100% sure as she's only got the back 4 to come through and she bites me every time i try to check lol.

We actually done the gradual withdrawl method at 13 months as she was rocked to sleep until then where i stayed in her room until she was asleep then started to walk out. Since 15 months she's been fine going to sleep on her own. But we've been doing  doing WIWO to settle as she won't really go to sleep if we're in the room since 14 months.

I don't think it's anything to do with her going in to a big bed as until 2 nights ago we've had no problems since she changed about a month ago.

Today I managed to keep her awake (well i didn't have to try hard as she just didn't seem tired which is also strange). And she napped 12.30pm - 2.40pm, I was going to let her have 2.5hr nap to try and catch up but she woke herself after 2hrs and still seemed tired/grumpy for a while. Hoping this phase doesn't last long lol.  x

Troubles with the big bed transition can be delayed ie fine for a few weeks and then the troubles hit - that's what happened to us.

it sounds like a developmental thing hun - there's so much going on at this age.  we had a rough time with ds from 18-20 months & then again from 22-23months!  We found at 19-20months that the nap needed pushing to 1pm.  This may or may not be the case with your DD, for now I would hold still with her current routine (in case it is just a developmental thing) & if she continues resisting naptime for several weeks I'd try putting her down a bit later.

Yesterday was the first time she'd refused to go to sleep at nap time/she wouldn't even stay in bed as normally she lays in bed with a toy/teddy and plays/chats then falls asleep if she isn't tired straight away. She didn't refuse her nap today but she was awake from 5.30am and fell asleep in the buggy at 12.30pm and slept for 2hrs.

I'm glad i'm not the only one who's having/had problems at this age, i guess i was just a little shocked as she's been doing so well sleep wise. x

Friday night Sophie slept at my mums, and actually slept okay, she was asleep for 8.30pm, woke around 12ish screaming and really upset which my mum said she thinks was a night terror and it took her a good 15-20mins to calm her down and she had to take her downstairs. She didn't end up going back to sleep until around 2.00am as she kept calming down then getting upset. But she slept from 2.00am - 8.15am. Napped from 12pm (I asked if she'd be brought back for 1.00pm but she fell asleep on the sofa at mums and slept until 2.45pm). I then had her in bed for 8.30pm but she didn't fall asleep until 9.20pm and she was shattered. She did a 5.5hr stretch then 1hr then 2.5hr and was up for the day at 6.30am but she had a long nap of 2hr 45mins yesterday which could of caused the short night?

We are having problems at bedtime with her getting out of bed and just screaming at her doorway/baby gate. This has just started 4 nights ago and I've been trying to do WI/WO but last night and tonight I've had to keep putting her back into bed a few times and then standing/sitting with her until she falls asleep to keep her in bed as i know she's kind of passed the tired point but i'm not sure why she won't stay in bed and settle as she's been really good at going to sleep on her own for a good 5 months now.

We've already had our 1st wake up after 25mins of her being in bed but i guess it's down to her being OT. x
