Anyone tried to wean LO from swaddle cold turkey?
« on: September 24, 2012, 21:55:15 pm »
My LO is almost 3.5 mts and the one arm out doesn't seem to be working.  He's constantly breaking from the swaddle and gets VERY upset when I try to swaddle him now, so I'm thinking he's ready.  Has anyone just tried cold turkey to put their LO in a sleep sac for both naps and nighttime sleep?

I have heard great things about the zipadeezip... One thing i di because my LO isnt quite ready his hands still go for his face is i got a miracle hlanket and used the top half for his arms and then put a sleep sack over it so his legs are covered but not swaddled. He seems to be doing well that way and we'll do naps in the zipadeezip first before we do nights.

We pretty much did cold turkey- but our guy was older. BUT if your guy is busting out or rolling over then it might be time. We also had a zip up the front bag and really loved that- no WAY the little worm could get out!!

As to the original question- we went cold turkey at 4 or 5 months and it was much more stress before hand than it actually ended up being!! ::) Always the way!

I think we weaned at around 4 months and we did try one arm out for a week, but tbh I think we could have just gone cold turkey and it would have been easier! My LO was constantly escaping from the swaddle anyway too. Is your LO finding his fists to self-soothe?

I would just go for it and see how you go for a couple of days ;)

He goes straight for his fists once he's out and now that he's one arm out,  I can hear him sucking through the monitor it's so loud.  :o

It's only been one day and night with the one arm out and it has gone okay.  He mantra cries right at the 45 min mark for naps and then I can hear him sucking on his hand.  He still does the cry on/off for the second 45 until the 1.5 hours is up but he has always done that.  Every time I go in, he's still asleep, but just whinning on and off.

He woke up at 2am last night and fussed for a few min then went back to sleep.  He was up again around 4:45, I fed him, and put him back down.  I'm hoping every night goes as well!

Thanks!

Sounds like the arm out is working for you! I thought I'd share what I did just in case anyone else reading the thread needs help. I weaned my LO from the swaddle at 3.5 months and used the Zipadee Zip. He loved it and I think it really helped the transition. (I think it really only took a few days for him to adjust, but we were also on vacation which complicated matters.) What I liked was that his hands were covered because he always scratched himself, even if his nails were trimmed! And the fact that his hands were covered didn't stop him from sucking on his fists.

My LO is 7 months now and I'm just now having him sleep in footed PJs at night so he can have more movement, but still using the Zipadee Zip at nap time.

Happymon. I tried the zipadeezip for a nap this morning and it was a disaster. His arms kept just stretching out as if exploring this new found freedom. I was afraid he 'd never go to sleep. We arent at the stage I can put him down awake yet due to gas/reflux issues so I am not sure if I should try again.

Skadiver. My LO was definitely fighting the swaddle (I think he secretly hated being confined) which could be why he transitioned from the swaddle to the Zipadee Zip easily. I also did the transition during the 4 month regression (which he hit at 3.5 months), so maybe I didn't notice a struggle with the swaddle transition because his sleep was already so bad! ha! That's actually another reason I stopped swaddling at that point. Sleep was already bad and I figured that it couldn't get worse. If sleep was good, not sure I would have been so bold to go cold turkey to the Zipadee Zip. I'm a big chicken when it comes to making changes and risking getting a bad nap!

HappyMom20 HAHAHAHA that makes me laugh so hard. That is me right now. His sleep is so bad right now. 40 minute naps, unable to go through transitions, wont let me resettle, waking up at 4am for the day.. the list goes on and on, not to mention reflux.. It's 4:30 and he's had 9oz today.. Dont know how he's not losing weight.. But I digress... I got so tired of swaddling, and reswaddling etc. So i just bit the bullet today and for all 3 naps he was in the zip. And low and behold the naps weren't any worse LOL. So I'll go for  it tonight too and see what we get. Please tell me this gets better :)

:-* hon!

do you have a thread on EASY or Naps so people can help you problem solve the naps with you? And is he getting treatment for the reflux? Is it being reviewed?
