9mth refusing afternoon nap, help please!
« on: October 05, 2012, 19:39:39 pm »
Help!

My DS is 9+mths and just started into a pattern of wonky naps.

His previous EASY was something like this:
Wake: 6:30 ish
BF: 7 am
E: 8 am
Nap: 9/9:30 ish (~1-2h)
BF: ~11
E: 12pm
Nap: 1:45/2ish (~1.25-1.5h)
BF: ~3
E: ~5
S: Somewhere btwn 6 and 7 pm (usually around 6:30/6:45

All of the sudden, naps are going haywire! He’s taking a super long morning nap (2-2.5h) and refusing afternoon nap (he refused for past two days).

Today I capped his morning nap at 1.45 h because we had to go somewhere. I tried to get him back down for afternoon nap around 1:45p (which is about 3 hours of A time -- he typically does about 2.45-3 hrs of afternoon A time), but it took him an hour to settle down before he finally took a nap, which makes me think he was OT/OS by the time I put him in...but that doesn't make sense considering his long morning nap?

Where do I go from here? Do I cap the morning nap even more? Do I cap the afternoon nap if ends up falling asleep so late in the day (would still want to keep a relatively early bedtime)?

Thanks so much!

Sounds like you have hit the start of the 2-1, or LO needs more A time. His A times are very short for his age, with exception of the last which is quite long.
Have a read of these - what do you think?
10/ 11mo sleep gone wonky? Read this first!
chronological EASY samples, 7-9 months
Maybe try first increasing both first and second A times by 15 mins and capping the first nap at 1.5 hrs?

Thanks for the advice!

Yes, I’ve read those threads. I think maybe this is the start of the 2-1, but it seems way early, right? And based on the advice on that thread, I’m hoping to try to do everything to keep 2 naps for as long as possible:)

The past 2 days have been good in terms of naps--morning nap was 1.5 h yesterday and 1 h today (he woke up on his own for both). I bumped the second A to ~ 3 h20 min, and he took two good afternoon naps (1.5 h yesterday and almost 2.5 h today). Only, now, the new issue is bedtime :)

His usual bedtime has been somewhere btwn 6 and 7 p following a 3-3.5h A. The past two days I’ve put him in around 3h knowing that he usually takes 10-20 min to settle in on his own. Both nights though, he’s stayed up talking to himself for an hour or more before falling asleep. He was happy, but I’m guessing he’s going to get sick of this situation pretty fast.

I’m assuming he’s UT as he got a lot of daytime rest. So, should I cap the second nap? At what time? I’d rather not push back his bedtime.

Mmm my boys sleep went wonky round this age. I think we did 2 x 1hr15 min UT naps for a bit then I had to start capping one with extended A times etc.
I would focus on only capping 1 nap and allowing him to sleep as long as he like for the other up to 2 hrs
What about something like this ie 6.30 WU
WU 6.30
A same as what it currently is
Nap 1hr capped
A 3hrs20
Nap up to 2 hrs
A 3.5 hrs
BT ??? Or does this make bt too late?
