Early Wake
« on: October 22, 2012, 22:38:50 pm »
My almost 12 month old baby is waking earlier and earlier. He was a 7am waker. Over the last 6 months it has been getting earlier and earlier. I have put up with 6:30, then 6 even 5:30 but this morning was 5am and I've got to do something to fix this!!
He is a textbook baby and has been on EASY since the day he was born (maybe the next day!). He eats heaps. He naps for a total of around 2h40 -3h during the day, divided into 2 pretty equal sleeps, around 9:30 and 2pm. He falls asleep by himself in about 5-10 mins. I start the bedtime routine, BF, bath, song around 7 and he is in bed by 7:20/30 and asleep around 10mins later. He doesn't wake at all during the night until 5am.
I have now resorted to waking at 4am and waking him a little to try and change the cycle but this is morning 2 and it doesn't seem to be working. I will persist with this but what else can I try???

Two long naps may be too much day sleep for him now. Have a read of this: 10/11 month old sleep gone wonky? Read this first!

Thank you, I have read through that link and it seems to fit for him perfectly and I'm onto it today. Just wondering though, if I shorten his first nap to 1hr, should I do the same with his afternoon nap? I'm worried he will try and make up the lost morning sleep in the afternoon and I will have achieved nothing?!

The idea of pushing the morning nap later and capping it at 1hr or 45min is to stop him catching up on sleep he's missing in the early hours of the morning. A 1.5hr nap in the afternoon shouldn't be a problem, but if it is, you may need to shorten your morning nap further, as its best to only cap one nap.

Ok so I've been waking him up after 45-1 hour in the mornings and although we had a rough start & for the first week it seemed to get worse & he was waking at 4:30-5, it seems to be getting better and we have had three mornings of post 6 which is great. However, in the mornings when he is still waking early it seems to be because he needs to poo. I have stopped giving fruit after dinner, any other suggestions?

I'm no expert on changing bowel motion times, sorry. I have not had that issue. I will see if I can find anyone who has some suggestions.

I did know a mom on here once who gave prune juice with breakfast because of that very issue.  It would depend on how sensitive your LO is to it, prunes always gave mine the most awful diarrhea.
