15 month old has one nap but too short!
« on: November 05, 2012, 21:38:32 pm »
Hi there,
my daughter has been sleeping so well until last week. she sleeps through the night, sleeping 12-14 hours (we live in a basement and it's dark in the morning...) at around 11 months i transitioned her to one long nap (2/2.5 hours)after 3-4 hours of A time - because she sleeps so well at night, she doesn't need 2 naps. this worked very well.
last week she started having early waking (at the 11 hour mark), and i was able to put back to sleep with a short cuddle (i could tell she needed more sleep because she was all whiny, as opposed to when she sleeps 12-14 hours she's in a good mood when she wakes up). at the same time, she started waking from her nap after 1 hour/45 min, crying and crying... so i'd go in and try to cuddle and put back down, but this results in the loudest screeching i have ever experienced! and NOTHING could get her to go back to sleep! i am at a loss of what to do! i end up letting her wake up from the nap and we just get through the day, but today 2 hours after this episode she was sooooo cranky i decided to try to put her for another nap. she didn't even go down to start the nap! i ended up rubbing her back/saying soothing words with her screeching, standing up in her crib because i didn't know what to. it wasn't even helping, but i thought she'd get tired out from screaming .... eventually i left the room and kept going in every few minutes... wasn't working either.... then i took her a cuddled with ehr and she was soooo tired from screaming for so long that she fell right asleep. It took an hour!
i am at a loss of what to do!
can someone please help me, maybe i need tweeking of my schedule....

May be her sleep needs are decreasing a bit. Is she teething at the moment - that can have an impact on sleeping.

Can you post your routine at the moment with wake up, nap times and sleep times please?

Thanks for responding to my question
her basic routine (before this problem cropped up) is as follows:
8:30 - wakeup
9:00 - breakfast and bottle
11:45 - lunch
12:00 - nap
2:00 - wakeup
2:30 - snack - bottle
6:00 - supper
7:45 - bath and bedtime bottle

I think the problem could be that her day is too short. Most toddlers are having a 13 hour day when they are still having a decent nap, her first A time is a lot shorter than most have. An 11 hour night is fairly standard for toddlers, especially with a 2+ hour nap.

Is her 8.30 wake up time one that suits you? If it is then you are looking at a bedtime at around 9/9.30 really, if you want an earlier bedtime then you need to start her day earlier.

You need to move her nap out a bit so it is about 5 hours after wake up - you may need to do it in 15 min increments over a number of days.

At 15 months olds my DD had been on 1 nap for 3 months and out typical day was

6/6.30 wake up
11.30/12 nap for 1.5 - 2 hours
7/7.30 bedtime

What do you think?
