13mo in 2-1 transition and 37m naps, help please?
« on: December 19, 2012, 11:49:21 am »
My DS is 13mo and we have been in the 2-1 transition for a few mths. I could do with a second opinion on his EASY to check we are doing ok please? He has 10 teeth, latest teeth are 2 molars last week but I'm medicating before naps. We have a combination of 1 and 2 nap days, more so 2 nap days TBH! His EASY looks like this

1 nap day

0630 WU
1100-1230 nap
1800 BT

2 nap day

0630 WU
1100-1137 nap
1500ish - 1530 (I tend to wake at 30m)
1900 BT

When he wakes at 37m he doesn't cry and occasionally it's because he has pooped. Today I increased his AT to 4hr35 and still woke at 37m. I leave to see if he will resettle but very rarely does. I am guessing its UT?

What do you think of my EASY, does it look ok or should I increase AT even more? When I put him in his cot he falls asleep within 5m so is clearly tired enough. He doesn't tend to WU at night when OT unless he is REALLY OT but copes with OT ok. He doesn't show much tired signs anymore so I tend to go with the clock instead but he is starting with a childminder in 3wks as I'm back to work soon and wanted to try and get him settled on one nap.

What do you think?

Thanks for looking
Samantha

Hi Sam, just going through this with J now so know how you feel!  I would say UT for the 37 min naps I think - I'd try bumping your A time up to 4h45 and see where that gets you.  How does he cope with the one nap days?  That's quite a long A time to bed on a 1.5h nap and I know J definitely wouldn't handle that.  Maybe if you could stretch out the first A a bit you might get a more even day?  Have you tried a CN and later bedtime on days with a 1.5h nap?  I had some advice from Sara (ZacsMumme) who used to do 30 min CN and BT 2h later if the nap was short or finished before 1pm, but if longer nap or finished after 1pm would go for EBT of 6pm.

Good luck - I'm rapidly losing patience with this transition!!!

Hi Katherine,

Thanks for coming back to me so quick.

I totally agree on the 1 nap days the second AT is too long but I have never had much luck with the CN as he refuses to sleep if he is UT at all and my day was getting too long. TBH he handles it very well, not really any NWs and if he is kept occupied he is usually fine.  We have had occasional days when he has 2hrs nap but the latest I've got to is about 1pm on the 1 nap days. The only backfire I have are some EWs of around 530ish but if he catches up over a few days these tend to go. These are the days I end up going back to 2 naps. On the plus side he tacks on very well most times which helps catch up.

I've also tried BT 2hrs after a CN and he just rolls around in his cot for 1hr or so and I guess he just isn't tired enough. The CN never worked during the 3-2 either and we had a lot of EWs!

I'll try bumping the AT like you said and see what happens. I know I can't do anything about him waking at 37m because he has had a poop but it happens quite a bit, it's like when he finally relaxes he then poops  :o  its frustrating as I wonder whether he would have had a nice long nap!

Thanks  :)
Samantha

Lol you're describing our situation exactly, even the poos!

I'm pretty much just pushing on with the A time, my logic being if the nap starts later at least with even a short nap it's not so long to EBT.  I'm going for really EBT (5.30pm) if I have to as CN never works here in the pm, APing back to sleep (if I can) if short naps or EWs, and if it all goes to pot with short night and EW I do really short am car nap (has to be less than 30 mins or we get pm nap refusal) then pm nap a couple of hours later plus EBT.  Generally we're getting less and less two nap days now (one in last week) though max nap length about 1h45 so far.

I hope some of that helps!

Have you checked out the 2-1 support thread?

Sounds like things are working great for you. Not very good at APing back to sleep here, once I go in the room it's game over!

Today he woke at 0715, so he went to bed at 1200 he had a little cry about 5ms before bed so I was worried I'd pushed him too far. Anyway he went to sleep within 5m but only slept 1hr10, didn't cry on WU just sat in his cot waiting. What do you make of that, OT or still UT?

I'll have a look at the support thread too, thanks
Samantha

If you're still having more two nap days than one nap days I'd say UT, but I wouldn't change anything for a few days in case it was a blip and he just needs a little longer to get used to it :)  things I am learning about the 2-1 - don't change anything too quickly, and if it seems like OT, it probably is!

Great thanks  :)

I'll hold for a few days and see how we go. At least the day has evened out a bit more today too, 1200 is the latest we've done the nap so far!
