Fussing more and drinking less
« on: January 05, 2013, 22:05:54 pm »
Hello, i'm just joined today :)

i'm going to delve straight in for some help if i may.

My now 6 month old has always suffered with colds, he just keeps getting them!
inbetween these bouts of colds he did sleep ok, from 8pm til 5am for a feed (sometimes waking at 3am for his dummy), it took a while to get to this stage but it lasted for abit, with the odd night of waking more.
We went to stay with my mum over xmas and he slept through for a couple night, but then at xmas he went odd, he just kept wanting to nurse but not nursing for long, seemed more unsettled and woke CONSTANTLY!!
Ever since then he has been a nightmare, he will want to nurse but will either refuse or will drink abit and once he comes off will refuse to go back on.... before all this he would take both breasts but just before xmas and up til now he only want 1.... IF that.
He will keep waking in the night every few mins to every hour or so, hes had a bunged nose since we went to my mums so thinking thats 1 cause of his bad nursing and waking but this time round it seems worse than the other times hes had a cold.... hes happy in general but will not nurse or sleep well anymore  :( i'm so desperate, does anyone know whats going on with my 6 month old?

It could well be the congestion.  Does he seem to be having any teeth coming through?  Have you started solids?  Any new foods?

thanks for replying.

Funny thing is, his congestion isn't a problem all the time, he was asleep next to me last night and again now and his breathing is clear, and sometimes when hes nursing it can be clear but will still refuse once he comes off.

I started solids in the week to see if it helped, baby rice but things are the same with him fussing and not sleeping well at night.

Not sure about teeth, i cant see any swelling but think maybe he might be feeling movement? I use ambesol on him.

As annoying as it is, solids can disrupt sleep as their digestive systems get used to having to do something extra than they have with breastmilk.  I seem to recall rice cereal being particularly constipating, so perhaps he's got a bit of tummy ache or something which is waking him?  What about trying something like pears instead?

Teeth can cause issues under the gumline by moving about, yes, without there being too much visible evidence for them.  We use anbesol liquid too along with some calpol when needed

thank you, yes i might try him on some mashed carrot or pear see if it helps.  He did start this waking and fussing weeks before i gave him solids though, going to have to take him the doctors as hes having green poos aswell.

Sometimes no matter how hard we try we can't get to a reason why they're doing something and things change so quickly with them.  You're doing great
