Short naps and lots of questions
« on: January 06, 2013, 03:05:21 am »
At the beginning of December, my LO (spirited, 4 months and 2 weeks) moved fairly easily on to a four hour EASY from a 2-3 hour EASY.  She definitely only needs to eat every 4 hours but the afternoon nap is the problem (and the am nap seems to be getting shorter every day).  When I started the transition, the 40 min nap monster had shown up so I increased her awake time a bit and used sh/pat to extend her naps.  The sh/pat worked like a charm for the morning nap and after a few days she was napping for 2 hours.  It hasn't gone as well for the pm nap.  I did sh/pat at the 40 min mark for a week at the start of December which did extend her naps and I got a few days of long naps (she'd cry for 2-3 min in the middle and then go back to sleep) and then back to short naps.  I've been working on extending the pm nap again but I don't feel it's working (but maybe I just need to stick it out and keep trying).  Day 1 - patted for 40 min and she went back to sleep.  Day 2 - patted for 30 min. Day 3 - for 10 min. Day 4 - patted for over an hour and she was calm but not really asleep and today DH patted for an hour and she was wide awake.  She generally seems quite happy after a short nap but that's not saying much because DD is usually quite happy to be awake even if she misses a nap.

Today looked like this:
WU and E - 8:10
S - 10:10-11:35 (I used to have to wake her from this nap at 2 hours but lately it's been 1.5 or a bit shorter) - played in her crib till noon
E: 12:10
S: 1:45 - 2:30 - DH patted from 2:30 - 4 - she did drift off again briefly but woke up again
E: 4
S: 5:15 - 5:50 (Started WD at 4:55 which was way too late - OT and hard to settle)
E: 6
S: 8
We've had a few EW 2 weeks ago but none this week.  She's had a few nights where she slept right through and sometimes she wakes up once.

Her A time is usually 2h and she's been settling to sleep fairly easily at that point (pacifier and a few pats).  Today was off because of the short naps and DH being in charge for the afternoon.

I'm fairly certain that the short pm nap is not OT because she was not waking up howling like she does when she's OT.

On more days than not the pm nap is short.  If I don't get in there to pat as soon as she makes a noise, she talks to herself for a while then cries a bit and back to talking.  Should I continue trying to extend the pm nap or increase her A time?  Even though she's not yet 5 months, is it possible that she's in the 3-2 transition?

When she short naps should I add a short 4th nap or put her to bed earlier?

Sorry for the long post.  After reading it again, maybe this would be better on the EASY forum - let me know if I should move it.

After another great night (8 pm - 7:30), I began WD 10 min earlier than usual just to rule out that OT may have been causing the short naps.  It took her longer to go to sleep (we started at 1h45 and it took till 2h before she was asleep) and then she slept 1h30.  Her am nap used to be consistently 2h long with her going to sleep after 1h50 to 2h of A time.  Does this mean I should increase her A time?

Hi

No I wouldn't increase am a time. 1.5hr nap is restorative so she's doing great there! If it gets to 1h20 or shorter then I would increase first a time (except 30min nap which is OT). If u increase now h could easily get her into an OT mess.

I would increase the second a time as 45 min naps are classic ut. increase by 5-10 min and hold for few days to give lo time to adjust. If h get short nap keep next a time short to prevent OT accumulating...hth x

Thanks for the advice.  Good to know that at least our mornings are going well!

We had another short nap this pm and I made sure to keep activities low key before her nap to rule out OS.  She fussed at 30 min but resettled quickly with her paci and a few pats but was up again at 50 min.  I tried patting for 25 min and she'd be calm for a bit and then was talking away happily.  I tried rocking her for a bit just to make sure she wasn't tired and she definitely was not.  The real test for tiredness came when we put her in the truck an hour after she woke up - the trip was 20 min and she didn't even come close to falling asleep so I guess I can be sure that she was feeling rested :)

I'll try increasing her A time by 10 minutes tomorrow and hopefully we get a better nap!

Naps went better yesterday and this morning.  I haven't increased her A times because she's been fussier than usual.  I think it's either because she's waking up a bit earlier than usual (7 or 7:30 instead of 8) or because of teething. She normally hates a long wind down but yesterday and today she seems happiest sitting in her room with me with the lights off and her white noise going. She's also sleeping longer than 2 hours! We'll see what the rest of the day brings :)

I've been observing her naps pretty closely lately and noticed that she usually moves around and sometimes cries out at around 36-38 min and 45-50 min.  Sometimes she settles on her own and sometimes she needs a pat (and on the bad days she can't be resettled!).  Are those sleep cycle transitions?

I always found my lo sleeps longer when teething.

Sleep cycles can vary for Los. Usually they're 45min, some have 30 or 40 min cycles too. But babies do to through light and deep sleep so that would explain the fidgeting...

Thanks, I thought they were sleep cycles and that it was normal but just wanted to check.
