Nighttime has become a disaster - 20 month old
« on: January 03, 2013, 16:52:05 pm »
Sorry to post a new thread, but I've read through several pages and I'm not quite finding my situation. My child slept beautifully from 6 months to about 14 months. For the last 6 months sleeping has been touch and go. Some nights he sleeps through the night, some nights he wakes up 1-2 times, some nights he wakes up every 2 hours. For the last 2 months nighttime sleeping has been a complete nightmare. He's also started waking up REALLY early (5:30 often).

He has no trouble going down at night and falling asleep by himself. He is on one nap and was sleeping about 2 hours.

An additional wrench in the situation is that I am expecting a new baby in 3 months and have to have a c-section for medical reasons. So, because I won't be able to pick up my toddler for 6 weeks, I've started transitioning him to a toddler bed (I know, he's still so young, but it's the only thing I can think of.) He still has no trouble going down at night in the new bed, though his naps have gone down to 1.25- 1.5 hours...maybe that's normal for his age though?

So, his schedule looks like this:
wake up 5:30/6
nap 11 (sometimes 11:30) - 12:30-1
sleep 6:30/7

he is waking up probably 4 times at night, sometime he gets out of his bed. sometimes not...

please help! both my husband (who's been getting up every night!) and I are at our wit's end!

ok well to start with I would forget the toddler bed transition as he is still really young for that...do you not have anyone around who could help you at BT for the first 6-8 weeks after the baby is born? I had a section and DH has to help out quite a bit with lifting etc for the first few weeks.
I do think at this age there is so little impulse control and putting him in a BBB is a recipe for disaster.
Is he teething at all?
So if it were me i would put him back in a cot and then set a nap for about 12pm and see how it goes for about 5 days. What do you think?

I was thinking the same thing about the toddler bed. I think a good solution could be just doing naps in the bbb and night in the crib (when DH is home). Or do you think that would be too confusing?

I will try to push him to 12 for the nap but he is typically drop dead tired at 11 (prob because he's up at 5:30!).

I think he might be getting his molars because he has all his other teeth and he has been complaining of his mouth hurting the past few days.

I guess I'm just curious why the last few months have been such poor sleep! (pre- toddler bed and teeth)

Thanks for your advice Becky!

oof! Things are going better, but not great!
We seem to be waking up less at night, possibly because we've successfully moved the naptime to 12:30, possibly because we've started putting him in a sleep sack at night to keep him warmer. But he still wakes up once, possibly twice during the night and at 5:30 every am.

We are trying to do the w2s, but so far limited success. I am thinking of posting another post just to get w2s advice!

thanks for the hugs! they are much needed!

Feel free to post about W2S. I have never really done it so not much use.
How long are his naps and what time is BT?

Teeth cause EWings for us.
